This study investigated the mediating effects that self-esteem(SE), maladaptive perfectionism(MP), adult attachment anxiety(AA), and depression(DP) have on the relationship between maternal parenting attitudes of care(MC) and overprotection(MO) in childhood perceived by college women and bulimic behaviors(BB). The results of data analysis of a sample of 421 college women are that both MA and MO predicted BB first through SE, MP, and AA, respectively and then through depression, which not only validates the hypothesized mediation model but also is congruent with the relationships among MC, MO, SE, MP, AA, and DP suggested by both attachment theory and existing literature. These findings suggest that college women who perceived more empathic understanding and care and less overprotective control and interference in the relationship with mother in childhood reported lower SE, stronger MP, and higher AA, respectively. And then, the lower SE, the stronger MP, and the higher AA are reported, the more DP is experienced. The more DP is experienced, the more frequent binge eating and vomiting are reported. Research and clinical implications, limitations, and future directions of this study was discussed in details.
