원불교 마음공부에서 ‘대중(大中)’의 의미

The Meaning of the Expression ‘Daejung’ in Won-Buddhist Mind Study

본연구에서는 원불교 교서 및자료에 사용된 ‘대중(大中)’이라는 표현의 구체적인 의미를 파악하고자 하였다. 이를 위해｢정전｣을비롯한 8가지의 원불교 교서 및자료에서 ‘대중’이 포함된 총 38개의 항목을 추출하고, 전문가들과 함께 용례 분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 대중은 ‘표준하다, 기준하다’, ‘(어떤) 마음을 갖다, 지키다’, ‘살피다, 알아차리다’, ‘관조하다, 반조하다, 밝게 비추다’의 네 가지 의미를 포함하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 원불교 마음공부와의 관계에서대중은 세 가지 특징이 있는데, 첫째는 ‘무엇’을 표준 또는 기준할 것인지와 같이 한 가지 의미 내에서도 마음공부상의 실제 적용에서는 그 내용에 차이가 있을 수 있고, 둘째는 네 가지 의미가 서로 중첩되는 측면이 있으며, 셋째는 마음공부에서 대중이 갖는 가장 기본적인 특성은 챙기는 마음이라는 것이다. 다음으로, 실제 현장에서 대중의 의미와 마음공부에서의 역할이 어떻게 이해되고있는지를 파악하기 위하여 원불교 예비교무 78명을 대상으로 인식 조사를 하였다. 조사 결과, 대중의 의미는 용례 분석 결과와 일치하는 내용의 네 가지 의미로 분류되었으며, 대중의 역할은 ‘목표, 목적, 방향 제시’, ‘표준, 기준 제시’, ‘마음을 살피고 바라보며, 공부심을 다시 챙길 수 있게 함’, ‘중심을 잡게 함’의 네 가지로 분류되었다. 원불교 예비교무 교육에서의 함의는첫째, 대중의의미에대한예비교무들의인식범위를확장시킬필요가있다는것이며, 둘째는대중에대하여언급하거나교육할때는보다분명한의미로전달할필요가있다는것이다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the specific meanings of the term “daejung” found in the scriptures and historical documents of Won-Buddhism. For this purpose, content analysis was conducted by professionals with all of the 38 contents extracted from the eight kinds of scriptures and historical documents. The result revealed that daejung includes four meanings: ‘standardizing,’, ‘keeping one’s mind’, ‘observing and recognizing one’s mind’, and ‘contemplating, reflecting, and looking at things as it is with the Mind.’ In the relationship with Won-Buddhist mind study, daejung has three features. First, in application to mind study, each meaning could be applied differently because each person has their own points like standardizing ‘what’ in the practice of mind study. Second, the four meanings tend to overlap each other. Third, daejung is based on the checking mind. Next, a survey was performed to examine how people understand the meaning of daejung and its role in mind study. 78 Won-Buddhist ministers-in-training, who are studying in the university or the graduate school of Won-Buddhism, participated. The result revealed that the term daejung includes the four meanings identically same with the result of the analysis with the 38 contents ahead. According to the answer by students, daejung plays a role in ‘presenting a goal, a purpose, and a direction’, ‘presenting a standard’, ‘helping to observe one’s mind, to watch over one’s mind, and to sustain their practicing mind’, and ‘helping to hold one s center in one s mind.’ This study has two implications for the education of ministers-in-training in Won-Buddhism. First, students need to expand their awareness toward understanding every meaning of daejung because the result showed that many students know only a part. Second, whenever speaking or teaching about daejung to the students, it must be delivered in a clear sense because daejung has multi-meaning.
