교양교육으로서 원불교의 종교교육

Liberal arts: Focused on the case of Wonkwang University

본 연구는 원광대학교의 교양필수 교과목인 종교와 원불교 사례를 중심으로 원불교 종교교육의 현황을 살펴보고그에 따른 과제를 정리하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 원광대학교의 종교교육은 1학년을 대상으로 교양필수인 종교와 원불교 (3학점)를 이수하도록 되어있다. 또한 교양선택으로 선과 인격수련 등 5개 교과목을 개설하고 있다. 전임교원이 시간강사에 비해서 종교관련 교과목 강좌를 많이 담당하고 있다. 원불교학교재연구회에서 발행한 교재인 『종교와 원불교』가 학생들에게 보급된다. 담당교수들은 이를 활용하면서 자량으로 수업을 진행하고 있다. 『종교와 원불교』의 내용은 ①종교의 본질을 설명하는 부분, ②한국종교를 소개하는 부분, ③원불교를 소개하는 부분, ④인류가 직면한 문제에 대한 원불교의 입장과 역할로 구성되었다. 이것은 원광대학교가 종교교육을 신앙교육의 하위범주로 설정하지 않고교양교육으로서 종교교육을 지향하고 있음을 증명한다. 아울러 원광대학교의 종교교육 운영현황에 따른 과제는 다음과 같이 제시할 수 있다. 먼저 필수과목인 종교와 원불교 를 위시하여 종교교육 관련 선택과목들의 수업목표를 재설정하고 각각 그에 따라서 수업목표 달성을 위한 바람직한 강의계획 수립과 체계적인 수업계획서의 작성을 추진할 필요가 있다. 둘째, 세부적인 차원에서 수업내용과 방법이학생들의 지적 수준이나 요구에 잘 맞도록 조정할 필요가 있다. 셋째, 종교교육의 특수성을 감안한 전용 수업 공간, 적정 수강인원 배정 등이 필요하다. 넷째, 학생들로 하여금 관심과 호응을 받을 수 있는 새로운 교과목과 프로그램의 개발이 필요하다. 다섯째, 바람직한 종교교육을 담당할 수 있는 역량과 열정을 가진 교수를 양성하고 초빙해야 한다.

This study aims to examine the current status of religious education in Won-Buddhism and to organize its tasks accordingly, focusing on the case of ‘Religion and Won-Buddhism’ as a liberal arts course. The religious education at Wonkwang University provides first-year students with three credits of ‘Religion and Won-Buddhism,’ a required liberal arts program. It also offers five additional courses as a general elective course, including the course ‘Meditation and Personality Cultivation’. Full-time faculty are more responsible for these courses than part-time lecturers. The textbook, Religion and Won-Buddhism, published by the Textbook Research Association for Won-Buddhism, is distributed to all the students. All the lecturers are using this textbook and delivering the lectures at their own discretion. The contents of Religion and Won-Buddhism consist of four main parts: ①the essence of religions, ②various religions in Korea, ③the introduction of Won-Buddhism, and ④the position and role of Won-Buddhism on the problems, which we are facing these days. This situation proves that Wonkwang University does not set religious education as a subcategory of education for religious faith, but rather aims for it as a liberal arts. Besides, the tasks according to the current status of religious education at Wonkwang University can be presented as follows. First, it is necessary to re-establish the instructional goals of these courses related to religious education and promote the establishment of plans for desirable lectures and systematic syllabus to achieve the instructional objectives. Second, the contents and methods of the class need to be adjusted to suit the intellectual levels or needs of the students at a detailed dimension. Third, the particularity of religious education requires dedicated classroom space and a fair number of participants. Fourth, it is necessary to develop new courses and programs to attract students’ attention and response. Fifth, lecturers with competence and passion for taking charge of desirable religious education should be prepared and invited.
