불교계 종립대학의 종교교양교육의 현황과 과제

Current Status and Tasks of Religious Liberal Arts Education: Focusing on the Case of Dongguk University curriculum

대학교양교육은 기초고등교육이자 대학 이후의 삶에 중요한 영향을 준다. 그러나 우리나라 대학의 교양교육은 본래의 교육적 의미를 잃고 오랫동안 그 방향을 찾지 못하고 있다. 또한 종립대학의 종교 관련 교양교육은 종교의 자유와 같은 인권문제까지 더해져 다층적인 어려움에 처해있다. 본 연구는 불교계 대표 고등교육기관인 동국대학교 교양교과현황을 기반으로 종교교육의 실태를 분석하고, 종립대학의 근본적인 역할에 대해 성찰하여 바람직한 개선 방향을 제시하고자 하였다. 동국대학교의 교양교육에 대한 가치선언은 2014년 다르마칼리지를 신설하고 관련 규정을 정비하면서부터 시작되었다. 해당 규정에는 불교를 기반으로 하는 건학이념이 교양교육에도 반영되어야 함을 명시하고 있다. 이후 수차례 진행된 교과 개편이 종교교육과 긴밀하게 연계되지 못 하였으나 최근부터 다양한 영역의 융합과목들이 도입되고 있다. 이에 대한 대안으로 화쟁사상을 기반으로 한 교육철학을 바탕으로 종교교육강화를 위한 협의회를 구성하여 제도적으로 불교 종립대학만의 종교교양교육을 만들어 나가야 할 것을 제시하였다. 구체적인 방안으로 인문학적이고 융복합적인 교양교육으로서의 불교교육을 실시하여 보편적 종교성을 지닌 불교의 화쟁형 인재로 학생들을 양성할 수 있을 것이다. 불교 종립학교가 종교적 특수성을 구현하는 교양교육과정의 새 모델을 완성해감으로서 종교의 특수성과 교육의보편성이 창조적으로 융합된 교육의 시범을 보이길 기대한다.

College liberal art is a basic higher education and has an important influence on life after graduation. However, the liberal arts education of Korean colleges has lost its original educational meaning and has not found its direction for a long time. Besides, liberal arts education related to religion at the university is facing multi-layered difficulties by adding human rights issues such as religious freedom. The purpose of this study was to analyze the status of religious education based on the current status of liberal arts education at Dongguk University, a leading Buddhist institution in Korean Buddhism, and to reflect on the fundamental role of the college and to suggest desirable directions for improvement. The declaration of values for liberal arts education at Dongguk University began with the establishment of the Dharma College in 2014 and the revision of related regulations in 2018. The regulation also states that the founding philosophy based on Buddhism should be reflected in liberal arts education. However, the fact that some subjects in some areas are related to Buddhism does not mean that liberal arts education as a whole embodies the founding philosophy. Although the purpose of the reorganization, which was conducted several times, was not closely linked to religious education, various subjects of convergence have recently been introduced. In the future, based on the hwajaeng (和諍) thought, the Council for Strengthening Religious Education was formed to suggest that religious institutional education for Buddhist universities should be established. As a concrete measure, Buddhist education as liberal art will be provided to cultivate students as a hwajaeng-style talent of Buddhism as a universal religion. It is hoped that the Buddhist school will complete the new model of the liberal arts curriculum that embodies religious specificity. And it will demonstrate the creative convergence of religious specialties and universality of education.
