일제강점기 민족종교의 역할과 보천교의 독립운동

A Role of National Religion and Independence Movement of Bocheongyo during the Japanese Colonial Era

2019년은 3․1독립운동과 대한민국 임시정부수립 100주년이 되는 해이다. 일제강점기 민족종교를 탄압하려는 조선총독부의 정책은 1915년 포교규칙을 만들어 신도, 불교, 기독교만을 종교로 인정하고 동학의 정신을 이어받은 천도교, 보천교는 물론 김좌진 장군의 북로군정서를 중심으로 한 대종교 등을 유사종교로 만들었다. 일제강점기 민족종교의 역할 가운데 가장 두드러진 특징은 망국과 도탄에 빠진 민중들에게 새로운 세상이 열릴 것이라는 희망의 메시지를 전해주는 것과 민족의 단합을 이끌고 항일운동의 중추적 역할을 수행하는 것이었다. 동학을 중심으로 교세를 펼쳐나간 민족종교 단체의 항일활동은 지금까지 제대로 평가받지 못한 체 오늘에 이르렀다. 당시 후천개벽사상은 억압과 수탈로 신음하는 조선인들에게 치유이자 희망이었다. 동학을 창도한 수운의 동학사상은 증산에 의해 그 정신이 지속되어 민족종교운동은 급속히 전파되었다. 차경석은 수운과 증산의 가르침을 정치적으로 확대하여 암울하고 도탄에 빠진 식민지시대 백성들에게 후천개벽이라는 희망의 메시지를 전해주면서 독립군 군자금 모집과 항일독립운동을 결행한 주요 민족종교 가운데 하나였던 보천교를 창시한 핵심인물이었다.

2019 marks the 100th anniversary of the March 1 Independence Movement and the establishment of a provisional government in Korea. During Japapnese colonial era, The Choseon Governor- General’s policy to suppress ethnic religion was established in 1915 and only Shindo, Buddhists and Christians were recognized as religions. The two religions, Cheondogyo and Bocheongyo, which inherited the spirit of Donghak, as well as Daejonggyo, which focuses on the Bukro- military regime of General Kim Jwa-jin, have become similar religions. The most prominent of the roles of ethnic religion was to convey a message of hope to the people who were devastated and robbed of their country, to lead the unity of the people and to play a pivotal role in the anti-Japanese movement. Anti-Japanese activities by ethnic religious groups, which have spread around Donghak, have not been properly evaluated until now, and have reached today. At that time, the Huchongaebyuck idea was a healing and hope for the people who groaned with oppression and extortion. Suwoon’s Donghak Thought, which led to Donghak, was carried on by Jeungsan, so that the national religious movement spread rapidly. Cha Kyung-suk politically expanded the teachings of Suwoon and Jeungsan. As a result, it delivered the message of Hucheon’s hope to the grim and broken colonial people, and was a major ethnic religious group that organized the independence army’s military fund-raising and anti-Japanese independence movement.
