Exploring the Organization of Mindfulness Meditation Based Death Education Curriculum

본 글에서는 마음챙김 명상을 활용한 죽음교육 커리큘럼 구성에 대해 알아보았다. 마음챙김은 MBSR의 예처럼 의료계, 교육계에서 그 효능을 입증 받고 있는데 특히 본 연구에서는 ‘죽음에 대한 마음챙김(maraṇassati)’이 죽음교육의 교재로서 사용될 수 있음을 살펴보았다. 또한 죽음이 의식 속에서 자각된 상태를 말하는 공포 관리 이론의 ‘죽음 현저성(mortality salience)’이 죽음교육의 구조에서 중요한 작용을 할 것임도 보았다. 그리고 본문에서는 마음챙김이 적용된 교육 프로그램과 죽음교육 프로그램의 예를 보면서 커리큘럼 구성을 탐색했다. 마음챙김 기반 죽음교육 커리큘럼은 교육목표, 교육내용, 교육평가 등 교육학적 관점을 전제해야하며 죽음에 대한 마음챙김은 죽음 현저성을 유발하는 도구로 사용될 수 있음도 살펴보았다. 죽음에 대한 마음챙김과 죽음 현저성이 두 축을 이룬교육 커리큘럼은 회기의 진행을 통해 삶에 대한 태도 변화와 죽음에 대한 올바른 수용성 획득으로 유도할 것이다. 마지막으로 국내외의 연구와 제언들을 반영한 마음챙김 기반 죽음교육 커리큘럼에는 죽음의 정의, 죽어감의 과정, 철학과 종교의 죽음에 대한 관점, 사후의 문제, 비탄(grief)교육, 자살 등이 포함되어야 할 것이라 보았다.

In this article, I have examined the composition of the death education curriculum using mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness, like the MBSR program example, has proven its effectiveness in the medical and educational sectors. In this study, I have observed that ‘Mindfulness of Death(maraṇassati, MD)’ can be used as a teaching material for death education. Also, I saw that ‘Mortality Salience(MS)’ of Terror Management Theory, in which death is active state in consciousness, would play an important role in the structure of death education contents. In this paper, I looked at the curriculum structure by looking at examples of mindfulness applied education program and death education program. Mindfulness based death education curriculum should presuppose pedagogical view such as objectives of education, educational contents, and educational evaluation. I also observed that MD can be used as a tool to induce MS. MD, MS, and the contents of death education were examined through a series of sessions to examine changes of attitudes of life and possibility of acquiring correct acceptance of death. Finally, it reflects domestic and foreign researches and suggestions, the mindfulness based death education curriculum should include definition of death, process of dying, view of philosophy and religion’s death, afterlife, grief education, and suicide.
