연봉동자상이 불교아동교육에 주는 시사점 탐색

Study on Implications of Lotus Buddhist Boy Attendants to Buddhist Early Childhood Education

본 연구의 목적은 연봉동자상의 지물을 중심으로 그 특징을 분석하고, 이를 토대로 불교아동교육에 주는 시사점을 탐색하고자 한다. 연봉동자상은 국립청주박물관(2003)의 『불교동자상』에서 29 점과 문화재청⋅불교문화재연구소(2002-2014)의 『한국의 사찰문화재』에서 25점 그리고 홍윤식 등(1991)의 『전국 사찰 등 소장 동자상 조사보고서』에서 6점, 총 60점을 수집하여 분석하였다. 연봉동자상의 특징은 연꽃, 연잎, 연봉가지, 연봉오리, 연잎줄기 등을 지물(소지하고 있는 물건)로 가지고 있으며, 그 중에 연봉오리가 가장 많았다. 또한 동자상의 얼굴은 둥글고 입가에는 미소를 짓고있는 밝은 표정이며, 머리가 크고 몸이 상대적으로 작은 실제 어린이의 모습과 비슷하였다. 연봉동자상이 불교아동교육에 주는 시사점은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 아동상은 ‘자신의 주변을 맑고 밝게만드는 어린이’와 ‘나쁜 것에 쉽게 물들지 않는 어린이’이다. 둘째, 교육관은 ‘아동은 모든 존재의바탕에 청정심이 있음을 알고, 스스로 맑히는 정화능력을 기른다.’이다. 본 연구가 인성교육 관점에서 불교아동교육의 교육적 가치와 방안 탐색을 위한 기초자료가 되길 기대한다.

This study aims to analyze the characteristics of Lotus Buddhist Boy Attendants focusing on natural features and to explore their implications to the Buddhist early childhood education. A total of 60 Lotus Buddhist Boy Attendants were collected for analysis: 29 from ‘Buddhist Boy Attendants’ of Cheongju National Museum (2003), 25 from ‘Research report of Korea buddhist heritage’ by the Cultural Heritage Administration and Buddhist Cultural Research Institute of the Korean Jogye Order (2002-2014), and 6 from ‘Research report of buddhist boy attendants owned by temples in the nation’ by Yoon-sik Hong et al. (1991) Lotus Buddhist Boy Attendants have distinction of having articles including lotus flower, lotus leaf, lotus bough, lotus bud and lotus leafstalk, where lotus buds were the most found from them. Moreover, the face of Lotus Buddhist Boy Attendants was mostly in a round shape appearing cheerful with quiet smile; and as they have relatively bigger heads compared to their bodies, which resembles actual physical shape of children. Regarding the implications to the buddhist early childhood education, the first implication is the child’s image which represents’ a child who makes all surroundings clean and bright and is not easily affected by bad influences.’ The second is the educational view implying that ‘a child knows there is pure spirit deep down in all existences and he/she develops a skill to purify him/herself.’ This study is expected to be a fundamental information contributing to educational value of buddhist early childhood education from the perspective of personality education as well as a pursuit to develop necessary measures.
