Influence of alexithymia and academic stress on academic concentration in nursing students

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of alexithymia and academic stress on the academic concentration of nursing students. Methods: The study subjects were 199 nursing students in the 1st to 4th grade of a university nursing department located in Chung-buk. Data were collected from September 25th to October 18th, 2020. Alexithymia, academic stress, and academic concentration were measured. Data analysis was performed using a t-test, ANOVA, Duncan s test, Pearson s correlation coefficient, and multiple linear regression analysis using the SPSS/WIN 25.0 program. Results: Alexithymia showed a statistically significant positive correlation with academic stress (r=.39, p<.001), and a negative correlation with academic concentration (r=-.32, p<.001). Academic stress was found to have a statistically significant negative correlation with academic concentration (r=-.43, p<.001). The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that the significant factors affecting academic concentration were academic stress (β=-.31, p<.001), major satisfaction (β=-.18, p=.001), and motivation to apply for nursing (β=-.28, p=.006) explaining 36% of the variance (F=11.56, p<.001). Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to develop and implement various programs such as peer counseling clubs and mentoring to reduce the inability to express one s emotions and maintain a smooth school life and friendships.
