Technology-Supported Individualized Learning and Middle School Students’ Achievement in English/Language Arts

테크놀로지를 활용한 개별학습은 학습자의 개별적 관심을 증진시켜 학습과정에 참여하도록 하여 학업 성취를 높일 수 있는 가능한 교육 방법으로 제시되어 왔습니다. 이 연구는 사전 및 사후 통제 그룹 실험 설계를 활용하여 영어(ELA) 과목을 수강하는 중학교 7학년 학생들을 대상으로 테크놀로지 활용 개별학습의 효과를 연구하였습니다. 실험 집단의 학생들은 자가 진단 테스트 및 전년도 표준 테스트 결과를 바탕으로 Blackboard 학습 관리 시스템에서 개별 맞춤화된 ELA 수업을 제공받았으며 통제 집단의 학생들은 테크놀로지 활용 개별학습이 아닌 일반적인 교사 주도의 수업을 제공받았습니다. 독립 표본 t-검정 분석 결과, 두 그룹의 사후 학습성취 점수에서 통계적으로 유의한 차이가 있었으며, 그 차이점은 전체 학급 접근 방식보다는 개별화된 수업과, 필요한 학습영역 파악, 그리고 학생 주도 학습의 결과에 기인한 것으로 나타났습니다.

Technology-supported individualized learning has been advocated as the viable instructional approach to improve student achievement, arguing that a student is involved in his/her learning process with more individualized interest and, consequently the more learning occurs. This study examined the effectiveness of the technology-supported individualized learning for entry-level seventh-grade students in English/Language Arts (ELA) utilizing pretest and posttest control group experimental design. Researchers provided students in the experimental group with individually customized ELA lessons on the Blackboard learning management system based on a diagnostic test as well as the prior year’s state-wide standardized test results. Students in the control group received traditional instruction without using technology-supported individualized learning. The independent samples t-test found a statistically significant difference in posttest scores between the technology-supported individualized learning group (M=16.87, SD= 3.99) and the control group in which technology-supported individualized learning was not employed (M=14.30, SD=3.24), t(75)=2.96, p<.05. Differences were attributed to individualized lessons, identified areas of need, and student-directed learning rather than a whole class approach.
