역경에 관한 욥기의 영성교육적 전망

Perspectives on Spiritual Education of Adversity based on the Book of Job: Human Integrity and Necessary Value of Adversity

본 연구는 ‘역경과 인간’을 다루는 욥기를 중심으로 역경의 영성교육적 전망을 제시하는 데 목적이 있다. 욥기 안에서 역경으로 인한 개인의 성격변화와 인간의 ‘온전성’의 관계를 탐구한 결과는 다음 두 가지이다. 첫째, 인간의 ‘온전성’은 역경에 의해 짓눌리거나 파괴되지 않는다. 둘째, 역경은 한 개인의 일만이 아니라 공동체 전체가 그 영향을 주고받는 삶의 일부이다. 이러한 탐구 결과 인간의 ‘온전성’과 역경의 가치 필연성에 관한 영성교육적 전망은 다음 세 가지로 제시된다. 첫째, 역경은 초대이다. 역경을 지탱하는 신앙심은 본래 하느님이 인간 안에 심어놓은 씨앗이기에 천성 안에 있는 것이고, 역경이 올 때마다 인간의 영성은 깊어진다. 이를 볼 때 영성교육자들은 특히, 어린나이의 피교육자들을 교육할 때 날마다 기도하고 감사하며 하느님을 사랑하는 일 그리고 공동체 안에서 살아가는 일이 얼마나 중요한지를 끊임없이 수련시켜야 한다. 둘째, 공동체 형성의 중요성이다. 영성의 그 깊이는 공동체 삶에서 드러난다. 자신의 역경과 위기를 견뎌내는 훈련 자체가 이웃의 역경과 위기를 함께 견뎌주는 열매로 맺어지는 것, 이것이 공동선이다. 셋째, 종교영성이 지향하는 것이 각 개인의 영성훈련이라면, 개인에게 역경이 올 때 이를 변화와 영적 성숙의 기회, 그리고 새로운 세계로 넘어가는 징검다리로 안내하는 일이 필요하다. 우리의 영성교육이 학생들에게 줄 희망은 이것이다. 우리가 겪는 역경은 우리를 찌그러트리거나 우리를 죽음에 이르게 하지 않는다. 우리가 누구인지를 알게 하며, 살아계신 하느님을 만나는 다리가 되고, 우리를 그분의 사람이 되게 한다.

This study aims at exploring the perspectives on spiritual education of adversity based on the book of Job. The insights gathered from studying the relation between an individual’s personality changes due to adversity and human integrity are as follows: First, human integrity is not necessarily destroyed due to adversity. Second, adversity is part of life, and not only the individual but also the entire community experiences its impact. Thus, the following three observations can be made with regard to the necessary value of adversity in educational perspective. First, adversity is an invitation. Faith that sustains a person in adversity is a seed originally planted by God in human nature, and human spirituality is deepened whenever adversity is endured. Accordingly, when an educator in spirituality or religion classes meets younger students, he/she is to foster spiritual discipline of regular and constant prayer, the sense of gratitude for life and love of God, and the importance of living in community. Second, the formation of community is important. Depth of spirituality is evident in community life. An individual’s withstanding of adversity with discipline in crisis is a common good that bears fruit and has impact on others in the community. Third, since the aim of religious and spiritual education is to train and foster an individual s spiritual discipline, it is important to direct and guide a person in adversity to face it as an opportunity for changes and spiritual maturity so that he/she may go over to a new world. Our hope is that this spiritual education is given to students: adversity we face does not necessarily crush us or lead to death. It may lead us to know ourselves, and become a stepping stone for meeting the living God and making us His people.
