예수재(豫修齋)의 교육적 의미

The Educational Significance of Ye-su-jae

죽음을 방편삼아 산자를 가르치는 불교의례가 있다. 망자를 좋은 곳으로 보내기 위하여 천도재를 지내는데, 산자를 위해서도 지낸다. 미리 공덕을 닦아 좋은 곳으로 간다고 하여 예수재라 한다. 예수재는 죽음 이후의 세계를 재현하여, 가까운 시기에 일어날 죽음을 만나게 한다. 산 사람을 위하여 명부세계의 시왕을 부르고, 심판과 처벌을 미리 받게 한다. 이를 통해 산 사람의 마음을 돌리고, 미처 깨닫지 못한 사실을 일깨운다. 예수재는 구원의 화신들과 만남을 주선한다. 심판과 처벌은 방편일 뿐이다. 인간세계에서 고치지 못한 것을 명부세계에서 바로 잡으려고 노력하는 시왕은 무서운 심판관이 아니다. 인간들의 잘잘못을 바로잡아 주려는 구원의 또 다른 모습을 한 신들이다. 예수재는 잘 살기 위한 인간의 몸짓을 구조화, 형식화된 장치로 마련하고, 동시에 그것을 학습할 수 있는 배움의 공간을 창조한다. 오늘날까지 그 장치들이 유효하게 작동되고 있다는 점은 예수재의 교육적 가치를 반영한다. 이것은 예수재가 가지는 인생의 교육적 디자인, 혹은 재현과 재창조의 힘이기도 하다.

In order to escape from anguish of death, Buddhism provides a ceremony, called Cheon-do-jae. As one of Cheon-do-jae ceremony, Ye-su-jae is a preparation ceremony for death by accumulating merit for next life. It represents the world after death in order to teach death and afterlife to the living beings. It allows a person to experience the death in advance. As it contains the stories relating the enlightenment or satisfaction, Ye-su-jae can be identified as educational ceremony. This study analyzes the fundamentals of Ye-su-jae’s ceremonial procedure and the arising during the process. It explores the educational significance of Ye-su-jae represented by judgement and punishment, then the ways to foretell the death and its significance. After all, people, who have transformed through the experience of death, practically participated to Ye-su-jae and experienced the death through difference senses(sight, hearing, touch). In other words, a ceremony is a place and a tool to learn how to live better with structured expressions of gestures. This is Ye-su-jae’s educational design for life or the power of representation and recreation.
