이 글은 불교 천도재의 교육적 의미를 고찰한 논문이다. 천도재는 인간은 윤회와 업의 존재라는 견해에 바탕을 둔 불교 의례다. 인간 존재는 사후 ‘무(無)’로 없어지는 것이 아니라 중유(中有)의 상태로 49일간 머물게 되며, 이때, 불보살의 원력으로 업을 소멸하고, 깨달음을 얻을 수 있는 계기를 마련하는 의식이 천도재다. 천도재는 영산재, 수륙재, 사십구재 등 여러 형태와 종류가 있으나 이 글에서는 사십구재를 중심으로, 그 내용과 형식이 지니는 교육적 의미를 찾아보았다. 사십구재 중의 법문의 내용은 영가를 각성시키는 데 초점이 맞추어져 있으며, 영가의 각성을 위해 5단계의 절차가 차례로 진행되는데, 맞이하기→씻기→기원하기→제사지내기→보내기가 그것이다. 이러한 절차는 교육에서 입학식(대면식)→예비 교육→본 교육→추수 교육→수료식의 과정과 유사한 구조를 가지며, 교육적 의미 또한 유사하다. 그리고 이들 매 단계마다 소(疏), 게(偈), 창(唱), 청(請)을 비롯하여 음악, 무용, 연극 등과 같은 매우 다양한 형식의 교육방법, 교육형식이 활용되고 있다. 천도재는 다음 세상에 태어날 영가를 위한 교육의 자리이기도 하지만, 이러한 의례에 참가하는 사람들에게는 죽음을 대비하는 교육의 자리이기도 하다.
The purpose of this thesis is to investigate educational meaning of ‘Chondojae(遷度齋)’ in Buddhism. Chondojae(遷度齋) in Buddhism is based on human beings are ‘things’ of samsara and karma. After having died, the human being does not completely disappear. But stay in a state of the Intermediate existence(中有) after death and before rebirth in another world for 49 days. Chondojae is a ritual getting spiritual awakening at the same time to abolish karma as Buddha’s wish. Chondojae has many kinds and forms, such as ‘Youngsanjae(靈山齋)’, ‘Suryukjae(水陸齋)’, ‘Buddhist 49days Ritual(四十九齋)’. I investigate educational meaning of contents and form of Buddhist 49days Ritual in this article. The focus of the Buddhist writings in Buddhist 49days Ritual is to arouse the dead. Five phases of procedures are moved for the awakening of the dead sequentially. It is a stage of the welcome - bath - prayer - reception - send-off. This procedure is much the same by education with the entrance ceremony - preparatory education - education - review - completion-style process. In addition, the education method of a variety of forms such as music, dancing, the drama is applied in Buddhist 49days Ritual. On the one hand, the Buddhist 49days Ritual is ritual to arouse a person born in the next world. On the other hand, It has the meaning as the education to prepare for death.
