방정환의 어린이관과 도덕교육의 의미

The Significance of Pang Chŏng-hwan’s Moral Education and View of Children

본 연구는 방정환의 생애와 어린이관에 대하여 살펴보고 도덕교육의 의미를 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다. 그는 천도교의 인내천 사상에 의거한 어린이관에 입각하여 어린이운동을 활발하게 전개하였다. 어린이를 한울님이라고 보았을 뿐만 아니라 인내천의 사도(使徒)라고 규정하였다. 아울러 현실적으로 억압과 고통 속에 처한 어린이를 구원과 해방의 대상으로 보았을 뿐만 아니라 민족의 미래요 희망이라는 측면을 강조하면서 우리나라의 자생적인 어린이중심교육을 전개했다. 방정환의 도덕교육은 어린이운동이라는 구체적인 실천을 통하여 도덕성의 의미와 가치를 목적으로 확립하고 현실 속에서 구현해 가는 과정으로 파악된다. 그 의미는 “①어린이의 성장 촉진, ②어린이중심교육으로 전환, ③지․덕․미의 전인교육, ④스토리텔링 기반 자기변화”의 네 가지로 드러낼 수 있다. 아울러 『어린이』에 수록된 각종 동화를 비롯하여 어린이독본 등은 하나의 체계 속에 도덕이론과 도덕교육이론이 긴밀한 관련을 이루고 있다는 점에서 매우 높이 평가된다.

This study examines Pang Chŏng-hwan’s (1899-1931) life and his view of children and also focuses on examining the significance of moral education. Pang based his view of children on Ch‘ŏndogyo’s notion of Innaech‘ŏn (Man is Heaven, 人乃天) and actively spread the children’s movement. Not only did he regard children as extensions of Hanullim (Master Heaven), but he also stipulated that they were disciples of Innaech‘ŏn. In addition, not only did he see the grim reality that children needed to be liberated and rescued from suffering and oppression, but also emphasized hope for the future of his people by spreading an autonomous children-oriented education in Korea. Pang Chŏng-hwan’s moral education establishes as its goal actualizing the significance and value of morality through the concrete application of children’s movements. That significance can be expressed as follows: 1. Promoting children’s development, 2. Switching to children-oriented education, 3. Holistic education(全人敎育) comprised of knowledge, virtue, and body, and 4. A storytelling framework for self-transformation. Moreover, various fairytales contained in the magazine Children including the “Children Reading Book” is highly appraised for its exemplification of the close relationship between moral education theory and moral theory in one system.
