원불교에서의 종교교육과 인권

Religious Education of Won-Buddhism and Human Rights

본 연구의 목적은 학생의 인권(종교의 자유)과 관련하여 원불교의 교립학교에서 바람직한 종교교육의 방향을 모색하는 것이다. 학생의 인권이 중요한 이유는 모든 학생이 인간으로서의 존엄과 가치를 실현하며 자유롭고 행복한 삶을 영위하기 위함이다. 종교교육은 건학이념의 실현이라는 고유의 목적성을 갖는 반면, 교화의 수단이 될 경우 학생들의 평등하고 공정하게 누려야할 교육권을 침해할 수 있다. 원불교 교립학교 종교교육의 현황을 살펴보면, 교화적 관점보다는 교육적 관점에서 접근하고 있으며, 수업내용과 종교활동에서 인권의 차별적 요소는 거의 없는 것으로 확인할 수 있었다. 향후 종교교육의 방향은 ‘종교학 교육+인성교육+교화활동’으로 요약할 수 있다. 이러한 방향은 원불교 교립학교 종교교육의 정체성을 확립하는데 매우 중요하며, 이를 실현하기 위한 과제로는 종교교육의 프로그램 개발, 교재, 교수–학습 방법, 평가, 종교교사 등을 보다 효과적으로 운영하기 위한 노력이 필요하다.

The objective of this study is to find the path-way toward desirable religious education in connection with students’ personal rights (freedom of religion) to be conducted at the educational institutions run by Won-Buddhism. Students’ personal rights are important because each student is entitled to live a happy life with his or her dignity and value honored as a person. While religious education has the very aim at materializing the founding spirit of an educational institution, it may then have a risk of violating the students’ rights to be furnished with education on fair and equal base if and when it is used as a means of religious enlightening. Upon examining the current status of religious education provided at the Won-Buddhism-run schools, it was found that education there is conducted from the educational viewpoint, rather than from enlightening viewpoint, and that there is virtually little discrimination in handling their personal rights in terms of curriculum as well as in the context of religious activities. Summed up, the future direction of religious education may be ‘education of religious studies+personality+enlightening activities’. Such direction is essential in establishing the identity of religious education to be provided at the schools founded by Won-Buddhism. To accomplish this task, it may be necessary to make efforts to develop programs, teaching materials and teaching-learning methods, as well as to carry out assessment and to train teachers for religious education in a more effective manner.
