Development of Socioscientific Issues Education Program for Elementary 5th Grade Students

The purpose of this study is to develop a socioscientific issues (SSI) education program for elementary school students. First the SSI topics were extracted from the 2015 Revised National Science Curriculum. Based on the results of the extraction, the contents of the program developed and the developed program was reviewed by the elementary school teachers. And then the first and second content validity reviews were conducted by science education and SSI experts. Finally the developed program was applied at an elementary school to find out the field applicability. Through these various steps, the validity of the program was secured. The results of the study are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing the Science Curriculum according to the framework categorized into 9 areas, a total of 57 topics were extracted as SSI. The topics of the environment and ecosystem areas are the largest, followed by technology·engineering areas and energy areas. Second, a teaching plan for each topic was prepared and learning materials were prepared for five topics centering on 2 units of the 2nd semester of the 5th grade, which included a number of topics in the field of environment and ecosystem. The selected units are Biology and Environment , Weather and Our Life . And SSI is three: Environmental Pollution, Sustainable Ecosystem Conservation, and Climate Change. By clarifying the problem situation of the topic, five sub-topics to be dealt with in the actual class were selected: Use of disposable items, Waste problem, Amazon in crisis, Climate counterattack, and Greenhouse gas emission rights.
