Historical Review of Elementary Chorus Education Development in Korea

  • 64

The purpose of this paper is to review the historical development of choral education in Korean elementary schools and to examine its historical, social values and contributions to Korean society. In this paper, the history of choral education in Korean elementary schools is studied by dividing the period from the beginning of choral education into four periods (the enlightenment era and the Japanese colonial era, the post-liberation era, the era of children choirs, and the era after the 2000s). Through this, the characteristics of the times of choral education in elementary schools were explored. Choral education in Korean elementary schools began when christian missionaries from western countries first brought choral music education to Korea. They started to educate choral music to students. As such, choral education in elementary schools became more accessible and available to the public. Due to the importance of choral education in Korean elementary schools, there were a variety of children s choirs and regional Boys & Girls choirs made in Korea. This has also elevated its choral music to a professional level, which has served as the motivation for developing the children chorus to become globalized. Since 2000s, elementary school teachers and principals have been trying to develop choral works that express distinct vocal and musical styles portraying many of the special characteristics of Korean culture, alongside interpretations of other various styles of music. In this study, the importance of choral education on social and behavioral development are also investigated.
