교회와 권력: 말함과 침묵의 권력배치

Church and Power: Power Structure of Speak and Silence

한국교회의 정치편향과 비 역사성에 대한 비판은 꾸준히 진행되어 왔지만, 교회권력 현상에 대한 미시적 탐구는 진행되어 오지 않았다. 이 논문은 1990년대 이후 표면위로 떠오른 한국교회의 우경화현상이 어떠한 권력적 틀로 표면화 되었는지에 관해서 추적한다. 이에 관한 방법론으로 이 논문은 미셀 푸코의 계보학적 연구방법을 소개하며, 근세에 영향을 미쳤던 중세의 사목권력을 “말함”과 “침묵”의 권력배치로 파악한다. 이 논문은 푸코의 사목권력 현상을 한국의 가정문화와 교회문화를 이해하는데 적용한다. 조선시대를 거쳐서 형성된 한국 가정의 종교문화인 유교와 샤머니즘은 말하는 쪽과 침묵하는 쪽을 양분한다. 즉, 말하는 쪽을 지배하는 쪽, 듣는 쪽은 복종하는 쪽으로 양분 한 뒤 이를 유교와 샤머니즘, 남성과 여성의 권력배치로 이해하면서, 이를 한국교회의 설교자와 청중의 권력구조 형태로 이해하고 있다. 설교자는 청중들에게 ‘아멘’이라는 ‘말함’을 유도하고, 청중들은 설교자의 설교에 ‘아멘’이라는 ‘말함’을 반응하면서, 말함과 침묵의 구조는 상호 교류되고, 상호통제가 되어 나간다. 이 말함과 침묵의 상호통제는 반공주의와 성공지향주의로 보편화된 교회문화를 극복하는 힘이 되지 못하고, 이 문화를 강화시키고 있는 것이다. 말함과 침묵의 권력구조를 재 구성해 내지 못하는 한, 한국교회의 우경화와 반역사적 행태는 지속될 것이다.

Although there have been many critiques on Korean Church’s strong political rightist tendency and its ahistorical nature, there is no serious study on the Church’s mirco-power structure. This thesis chases the Church’s devotion to rightist power since 1990’s. To analyze this phenomenon, this thesis introduces Michell Foucault’s genealogy, and the writer reorganizes the structure of pastoral power with “speak and silence.” This thesis applies the structure of pastoral power with Korean family system and the organization of the Church. Since the period of Chosun dynasty, the religions of Korean family, Confucianism and shamanism dichotomize active or speaking territory with that of passive or silence. This thesis applies the binary opposition with Korean Church’s preacher and audience relationship. Preachers induce audience to say ‘Amen’ and audience respond preachers. Through this process, they exchange power, and control each other. The exchange of power through speak and silence reinforces current KoreanChurch’s culture of strong anti-communism and capitalistic success oriented nature. If power structure formed by speak and silence fail to be overcome, Korean Church’s ahistorical process and ultra rightist tendency will go on.
