동학의 한울님과 불교의 무아사상에 대한 비교연구

A Comparative Study on Hanulnim of Donghak and No-Self of Buddhism

동학은 수운의 체험을 통해 확인된 한울님이라는 유일신을 믿는 종교이다. 한울님은 절대자로서 인간을 초월해서 있는 존재이며 절대타자에 의지한다는 점에서 동학은 인간 스스로의 깨달음을 강조하는 불교와는 전혀 다른 종교이다. 한편 동학의 주문에 대한 수운의 설명을 통해 나타나는 한울님의 존재는 지기로서 인간의 안에는 신령으로 밖에는 기화로서 작용하는 존재이다. 이러한 한울님의 기운은 텅 비어서 혼자서는 작용하지 못하고 다른 것을 받아들임으로써 힘을 발휘하여 인간과 함께 작용하는 인간 내재적인 성격을 가지고 있다. 이렇게 지기로서 작용하는 한울님에 있어서는 동학과 불교와의 관련성을 생각해 볼 수 있으며 이 글에서는 신령과 기화를 각각 불교의 무아사상과 연기사상에 대비시켜 그 유사성을 조명해 보았다. 신령과 기화를 잘 알아서 각자위심을 극복하는 동학과 무아와 연기에 대한 깨달음을 통하여 자아에 대한 집착을 벗어나는 불교는 탐욕과 이기심의 극복이라는 목표에서 서로 근접한다. 그리고 이를 위한 수행에 있어서도 마음을 닦는 공부를 가장 중요시 한다는 점에서 두 종교는 서로 유사성을 보인다.

Donghak is a Korean religion established by Suwun Choi who experienced a mystic encounter with God, Hanulnim. Hanulnim is the Absolute Other which exists beyond human beings; the one and only God of all other monotheistic religions. In that sense Donghak has nothing in common with Buddhism which emphasizes realization through self cultivation while placing no weight on the grace of God. On the other hand, a new aspect of Hanulnim is observed in Suwun’s exegesis on the 21-letter incantation. According to his explanation, Hanulnim works as Ultimate Energy while existing both inside and outside of humans, having no fixed substance and gaining strength only after having embraced others. It has an inherently human characteristic because it needs human assistance to produce achievements. When Hanulnim works as Ultimate Energy, we can think of Donghak in relation to Buddhism. The Holy Spirit existing inside of humans can be compared to the concept of No-Self in Buddhism while the Energy existing outside of humans may be compared to the doctrine of Dependent Arising. When a Donghak practitioner overcomes the self oriented greed through the proper workings of the Holy Spirit and Energy, he resembles a Buddhist practitioner who clings to nothing through realization of the doctrine of No-Self and Dependent Arising. Emphasis upon mind cultivation is also common to both religions.
