보다 쉬운 띄어쓰기 규정의 정립을 위하여

국어 사용자들이 반드시 따라야 할 규정 중에는 <한글 맞춤법>의 일부를 차지하고 있는 띄어쓰기 규정이 있긴 하지만, 사실상 현재의 띄어쓰기 규정을 일반적인 국어 사용자들이 제대로 이해하고 실제 글을 쓸 때 적용하기란 여간해서는 힘든 것으로 여겨지는데, 이는 현행 띄어쓰기 규정에는 규정의 취지마저 파악하기가 힘들 정도로 각종 문제들이 산재해 있기 때문으로서, 현행 띄어쓰기 규정에 나타난 문제점은 대략 다음과 같이 파악할 수 있다. 우선 전체적으로 조항마다 설명이 불충분하여 실질적으로 도움이 되지 않으며, 일부 조항에서는 설명이 중복되어 국어 사용자들에게 혼란을 야기하고 있을 뿐 아니라, 47항과 48항의 경우는 다른 조항과는 판이한 방식으로 기술되어 있어 일관성을 상실하고 있는 실정이다. 또한 ‘단어’별 띄어쓰기라는 기준 외에 ‘단음절’이나 ‘전문 용어’같은 또 다른 기준이 개입되어 문제를 가중시키고 있는 이외에도, 단어별 띄어쓰기에 치중하다 보니 구를 이루는 경우에 대한 설명 또한 부족한 실정이고 국어의 일부를 이루고 있는 외래어의 처리에 대한 조항도 찾아볼 수 없다. 따라서 국어 사용자들이 띄어쓰기를 하는 데 있어 실질적인 도움을 줄 수 있기 위해서라도 현재의 띄어쓰기 규정은 최대한도의 개선이 불가피한 것으로 여겨지므로, 이 글에서는 국어 사용자들로 하여금 원만하게 띄어쓰기를 할 수 있게 하는 나름대로의 방법을 모색해 보았다. 그러나 현재와 같이 띄어쓰기 조항들이 <한글 맞춤법>의 일부로 존재하는 한 띄어쓰기 규정은 양적인 면에서나 내용적인 면에서나 한계가 있을 수밖에 없으므로, 띄어쓰기 규정이 더 이상 <한글 맞춤법>의 일부가 아니라 독립된 규정으로 분리되기를 기대해 본다.

It is considered extremely difficult for general Korean speakers to properly understand the spacing provisions of Chapter 5 of the Korean Spelling Act, which is currently applied to spacing in Korean. This is because various problems are scattered in the current spacing regulations. There are about six problems that have appeared in the current spacing regulations. First of all, the explanation for each clause is insufficient, which is not actually helpful. In addition, in some provisions, explanations are duplicated, causing confusion to Korean language users. On the other hand, in the case of paragraphs 47 and 48, it is described in a different way from other provisions, so it is losing consistency. Fourth, in addition to the criteria of spacing by word, other criteria such as ‘single syllables’ and ‘specialized terms’ are involved, adding to the problem. Fifth, as the focus is on spacing by word, the explanation of the case of forming a phrase is also insufficient. Finally, there is no provision for foreign languages that form part of the Korean language. Therefore, in this paper, we sought a methodology that allows Korean language users to smoothly spacing. Hopefully, spacing regulations will be separated into independent regulations.
