Religious Education of the Catholic Schools: Definitions, Objectives, and Methods

본 연구의 목적은 가톨릭계 학교에서 수행하는 종교교육의 본질을 고찰하는 것이다. 이 목적을 위해 구체적으로 가톨릭계 학교의 종교교육의 개념, 목적, 그리고 방법적 원리를 규명하였다. 본 논문은 문헌조사연구로서, 바티칸에서 발간한 가톨릭교회의 공식적 문헌들과 국내에서 발표된 종교교육에 관한 선행연구물들을 자료로 사용하였다. 가톨릭계 학교의 종교교육은 가톨릭 진리를 가르치고 습득하는 교육이다. 이때 가톨릭 진리란 협의적으로 가톨릭교회의 전통과 가르침을 의미하는 동시에, 광의적으로 동서고금을 통해 인류가 지녀온 사랑, 평화, 정의 같은 ‘보편정신’을 포함하는 개념이다. 종교교육의 목적은 교육을 통해 학생들로 하여금 그리스도를 닮은 전인적 성숙과 완전한 충만성에 도달하게 돕는 것이다. 끝으로 종교교육의 목적을 충실히 달성하기 위해 다음과 같은 구체적인 여섯 가지 방법적 원리를 제안하자면, (1) 명확한 종교교육의 목적, (2) 학생들의 욕구 분석, (3) 학습자의 환경 인식, (4) 공감의 교육, (5) 종교교육 지원체제 구축, (6) 체계적 종교교사 양성 등이다.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the nature of the religious education in which is performed in the Catholic schools in Korea. To accomplish this purpose, this study examined three concepts such as definitions, objectives, and methodological principles of the religious education employed by the Catholic school. This research provides the in-depth review of literature relevant to the subject based upon a vast volume of the Catholic Church s documents and previous studies.The religious education of the Catholic schools can be defined as the education for teaching or learning the Catholic truth, which includes not only traditions of the Catholic Church, but also the precious spirits of people such as love, peace, and justice that have been inherited from age to age. The objective of the religious education is to help students reach the self-development and self-fulfillment so as to be like another Christ. Finally, six general recommendations for better practice of religious education in the Catholic schools were suggested as following: (1) Clarify the objective of religious education, (2) Analyze students needs, (3) Recognize students environments, (4) Do sympathetic teachings, (5) Establish supporting systems for religious education, and (6) promote excellent educational system for teachers of religious education.
