놀이치료에서 나타난 ‘종(鐘)’의 상징에 대한 연구

Study on the Symbolism of Bell in Play Therapy

본 연구의 목적은 놀이치료에서 놀이장면과 모래상자에 등장하는 종의 상징적 의미에 대해 고찰해보고자 하였다. 분석심리학 관점에서 치료자는 내담자의 고유한 정신세계를 나타내는 상징에 대한 깊은 이해가 중요하다. 이를 위해 종의 일반적인 특성을 알아보고 동양종과 서양종의 유래 및 발달과정을 역사, 문화, 예술, 종교와의 관련성을 중심으로 살펴본 후, 다의적인 종의 상징을 확충해 보고자 하였다. 종에 부여되는 상징성은 첫째, 시종(時鐘)으로서 시계의 기원을 지니는 종으로서 청각적인 울림으로 주로 정각에 시간을 알리는 의미이다. 둘째, 악종(樂鐘)으로서의 종은 제사나 연회를 베풀 때 종소리를 내어 청정의 의미를 지닌다. 셋째, 시종(始終)으로서의 종소리는 시작을 알림과 동시에 끝, 그리고 새로움을 상징한다. 넷째, 경종(警鐘)으로서의 종은 위급한 일이나 비상사태를 알려서 경각심을 일으키는 상징이 된다. 다섯째, 기독교와 불교 등 종교에서 사용하는 종은 신성(神聖)으로서 존엄성과 성스러움을 상징한다. 여섯째, 벽사(辟邪)와 진경(進慶)의 의미로 때론 악령을 물리치는 의미와 경사스러운 일을 끌어들이는 것을 상징한다. 일곱째, 종을 울리는 것은 죽음과 재생(再生) 또는 치유(治癒) 적인 의미를 나타낸다. 여덟째, 종소리가 인간과 대상을 연결(連結)하고 소통(疏通)하게 하는 매개로 사용되기도 한다. 아홉째, 종소리는 평화와 승리, 자유, 행운 등의 기념(紀念)을 상징한다. 이상과 같이 아홉 가지로 범주화된 종의 상징성에 근거하여 다양한 연령과 성별, 다른 심리적 과제를 가진 내담자의 놀이치료에서의 놀이장면과 모래상자에 등장하는 종의 의미를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 본 연구에서는 놀이치료에서 내담자가 사용하는 종의 상징성을 9가지로 범주화하여 확충하였고, 종의 분석심리학적 상징적 의미와 해석을 통해 내담자의 의식화와 그 변환의 과정을 이해할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study is to explore the symbolic meanins of bell which frequently appears in play therapy and sandplay therapy. It is important to understand what symbolism is, since the symbol chosen by the client represents a unique mental world. To this end, this study examined general characteristics of bells, the origins and developmental processes of Eastern and Western bells in relation to religion, history, culture and art and amplified the polysemous symbolism of bells. As a result, the symbolism of bells was examined in nine categories. First, bells as time signals were derived from clocks, and they serve a function of telling the time every hour. Second, bells as musical instruments produce sound representing purity during memorial services or banquets. Third, the bell-ringing announces the start and end and symbolizes newness. Fourth, warning bells were used to announce urgent incidents or emergencies. Fifth, bells used in religion, such as Christianity and Buddhism, should be consecrated before they are used at religious services. And bells, used in dedication services and given sacred nature, are symbolic of sacredness. Sixth, the sound of bells symbolizes exorcism for expelling evil spirits and fortune-bringing to attract joyous events. Important roles of bells in human history and life are related to superstitious and shamanistic power. Seventh, the bell ringing represents death and regeneration and healing. Eight, the connection and communication between humans and some entities can be considered the essential symbolism of bells. Ninth, the sound of bells symbolizes peace, victory, liberty and good luck. Bells are made and rung mostly in commemoration of historical events. Also, The symbolism of bells appearing in play therapy and sandplay therapy created by the clients of different ages, sexes and psychological tasks were found to be applied to the nine categories above mentioned. This study intended to understand the consciousness process of clients’ inner worlds and their transformation process through the symbolic meanings of bells and the interpretation.
