사르트르와 들뢰즈 철학에서 잠재성의 문제

The Virtual in Sartre and Deleuze

사르트르의 실존철학에서 인간은 어떤 선행된 본질도 없는 순전한 활동성으로 규정된다. 우리는 오로지 기투를 통해 스스로를 형성해 나간다. 이런 점에서 아직 ‘실현되지 않았으나 내재되어 있는 가능성(possibilité)’이라는 관념이란 한낱 허상, 실재에 대한 건전한 인식을 가로막을 위험을 내포한 망상에 불과하다. 그러나 의식 주관이라는 지평으로부터 논의를 시작하는 사르트르와는 전혀 다른 방식으로, 선-의식적이며 전-인격적인 수준에서 이루어지는 가능성에 관한 비판을 우리는 들뢰즈에게서도 발견할 수 있다. 들뢰즈는 베르그손을 따라 ‘가능성’ 개념을 비판하는 가운데 ‘잠재성(virtualité)’에 관한 사유가 이루어져야 한다고 역설한다. 들뢰즈에게 있어 실재에 선행하는 가능성이란 거짓된 관념이며 실재를 모방하여 만들어진 결과물일 뿐이다. 사르트르와 들뢰즈가 각기 어떤 의도와 논증을 통해 가능성을 비판하고 잠재성의 관념을 제시했는가를 비교·분석해야 하는 이유는 바로 여기에 있다. 이를 위해 우리는 아리스토텔레스적 뒤나미스(dynamis) 개념을 매개로 삼을 것이다. 잠재성 개념의 원천이 되는 뒤나미스 개념을 입각점으로 삼아, 우리는 어떻게 사르트르와 들뢰즈의 철학이 공통적인 논점을 취하고 있으면서도 서로 다른 방향으로 분기하는가를 조망하고자 한다. 이 논문은 먼저 아리스토텔레스의 뒤나미스와의 비교를 통해 들뢰즈의 잠재성 개념이 가지는 의미를 살펴보고(Ⅱ), 사르트르에게 있어 가능성과 잠재성이 어떻게 규정되는가를 분석할 것이다(Ⅲ). 그 이후 우리는 들뢰즈와 사르트르의 잠재성 개념이 어떤 점에서 공통적인 함축을 가지며 또 차이 나는가를 확인해 볼 것이다(Ⅳ).

In existentialism of J.-P. Sartre, human is defined as mere activity without any antecedent essence. We shape ourselves through the projection of consciousness. In this respect, the notion of “possibility that has not yet been realized” is just an illusion, a delusion with a danger of obstructing our perception of reality. However, we can also find in Deleuze a critique of the possibility that is made on the pre-conscious and pre-personal level which quite different from Sartre, who starts from the horizon of consciousness. Deleuze, following Bergson s critique of the concept of “possibility”, emphasizes the need to think about “virtuality”. For Deleuze, the possibility that precedes reality is a false idea and is only a result of imitation of reality. This is why it is necessary to compare and analyze how Sartre and Deleuze criticized possibility and presented the idea of virtuality from their different intentions and arguments. To this purpose, I will use the Aristotelian concept of dynamis as a medium. Taking the Dynamis concept, which is the source of the concept of virtuality, as a scaffold, I try to examine how the philosophies of Sartre and Deleuze diverge in different directions while taking a common issue. This paper will, at first, examine the meaning of Deleuze s concept of virtuality through comparison with Aristotle s Dynamis (II), and analyze how possibility and virtuality are defined in Sartre (III). After that, we will examine how Both concept of virtuality have in common and differ from each other (IV).
