토마스 리드의 반가설주의 방법론

Thomas Reid on Anti-Hypotheticalism

본 논문은 영국 경험론 전통에 서 있는 토마스 리드의 철학적 방법론에 관한 글로서 그의 반가설주의를 다룬다. 어떠한 가설도 인정함 없이 철저한 귀납적 방법론을 바탕으로 자신의 철학적 체계를 세우려고 하는 리드는 흄에 의해서 제기된 인과성의 문제를 어떠한 방식으로 해결하려고 하는가? 리드는 가설과는 다른 ‘상식에 기초한 본성적인 원리’를 도입함으로써 이 문제의 해결을 시도한다. 논문을 통해 필자는 첫째, 영국 경험론자인 토마스 리드의 귀납적 방법론의 구체적 내용이 무엇인지, 둘째, 리드의 가설주의에 대한 초기와 후기의 다소 모순되는 입장을 어떻게 양립가능하게 만들 수 있는지, 셋째, 반가설주의적 경험론이 직면한 인과성 신념과 자연의 제일성 문제를 리드가 어떻게 해결했는지를 살펴본 후, 마지막으로 그 해결방법이 과연 타당한지를 살펴보고자 한다.

In this paper, I deal with Reid’s philosophical method called anti-hypotheticalism. Reid accepts the empirical inductive method as the tool for establishing his philosophy. In order to free from metaphysical hypotheses in his philosophical method, he introduces the first principles of common sense as another tool for establishing his philosophy, along with the empirical inductive method. I will explore the possibility of Reid’s attempt to establish his philosophical system and related issues, especially the problem of causality. Although his attempt is meaningful in some respects, Reid fails to establish his philosophy only with pure empirical inductive method.
