뱀의 상징성 연구

A Study on the Symbolism of Snakes

상징은 무의식에서만 감지되는 것을 의식화함으로서 의식의 지평을 넓혀주는 중요한 수단이 된다. 일반적으로 동물모티브는 인간의 원시적이고 본능적인 면을 상징함으로써 인간을 좀 더 본질적인 세계와 연결시켜 주는 것으로 알려져 있다. 본 연구에서는 뱀에 대하여 생물학적인 특성과 상징성을 동·서양의 신화, 민담, 성서를 통해 살펴보고 내담자들의 모래놀이상담에 나타난 뱀의 상징적 의미를 살펴보았다. 뱀은 많은 알과 새끼를 낳고 대지와 가까운 특성으로 풍요와 다산, 생명의 힘, 창조를 나타내며 허물을 벗는 특성에서 비롯된 재생, 영생, 치유의 상징까지 담고 있다. 모래놀이상담 상자에서도 뱀은 다양한 상징으로 표현되는데, 본 연구에서는 3명의 대상을 통해 상징이 어떻게 구현되는지를 살펴보았다. 먼저 가족과 갈등을 겪고 있는 사춘기 남학생은 죽음과 재생, 치유적인 측면을 나타냈으며, 초등학교 5학년 여학생은 영생의 측면으로, 또래관계에서 불안감을 크게 느끼는 아동에서는 죽음과 공포의 대상으로 표현되었다. 연구를 통해 뱀의 상징이 확충되었고 모래놀이상담에서 뱀의 상징은 인간의 무의식적이고 본질적인 세계와 연결시킴으로서 내면의 통찰과 이해를 확장시켜 주는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Symbols are an important means of widening the horizon of consciousness by making conscious what is perceived only in the unconscious. In general, animal motifs symbolize human primitive and instinctive sides, connecting human beings with a more essential world. This study examined the biological characteristics and symbolism of snakes in Eastern and Western myths and folktales and biblical texts and analyzed the meanings of snake symbols expressed in the process of sandplay counseling of several clients. Snakes lay a large number of eggs or bring forth many young at a time and live close to earth, thus symbolizing abundance, fertility, vital force, and creation. Also, their ecological habit of molting is related to the symbolic meanings of rebirth, eternal life, and healing. In sand trays, snakes represent various symbolic meanings. This study looked at how snake symbols were expressed in the sand trays of three research subjects. First, in the sand trays of a teenage boy experiencing conflict with his family, snakes symbolized death, rebirth and healing. In the case of a fifth-grade elementary school girl, snakes appeared as an expression of eternal life. In the case of a child complaining of anxiety in peer relationships, snakes were symbolic of death and an object of fear. This study amplified the symbolism of snakes, demonstrating that snake symbols extend insight into and understanding of the human inner side as a means of approaching unconsciousness and essential world.
