유리의 상징적 의미에 대한 연구

A Study on the Symbolic Meanings of Glass

상징은 분명하고도 직접적인 의미 이상의 어떤 것을 나타낸다. 우리는 완전히 정의할 수도 설명할 수도 없는 이러한 개념을 나타내기 위하여 끊임없이 상징적인 용어를 사용한다. 상징은 의식을 초월하는 내용의 상을 육화한 것이며, 신이 부여한 우리 천성의 영원한 근거를 가리킨다. 상징을 이해하고 체험하면, 상징은 인간을 인간 존재의 본래적인 존엄성으로 이끌어준다. 유리는 반짝이는 아름다움과 광채, 투명함과 빛의 반사 등으로 실생활 용품, 건축물, 쥬얼리 등 다양하게 활용되고 있으며 쉽게 깨어지는 이미지가 강하다. 유리는 일상생활에 밀접하게 관련 있는 만큼 상징 언어로도 사용된다. 모래놀이상담 상자에도 여러 가지 의미와 목적을 가진 유리가 등장하는데 본 연구에서는 연금술과 동화를 통한 유리의 상징적 고찰을 통하여, 내담자의 모래 상자에 다양하게 투사되어 나타난 유리의 상징적 의미를 확충해보았다. 연금술 과정으로 살펴본 유리는 니그레도 단계에서 우로보로스, 이중성, 죽음, 재탄생을 상징하고, 알베도 단계의 유리는 메르쿠리우스, 정화, 신성을 상징하며, 루베도 단계에서의 유리는 정제, Self, 변환을 상징하였다. 동화에서 유리는 이중성, 죽음, 단절, 영웅의 과업, 통과의례, 그림자의 상징성을 가지고 있었다. 또한 성폭력 피해 경험을 가진 아동과 성인의 모래놀이상담 사례를 통하여 유리가 신성, 이중성, 죽음, 단절, 정화, Self, 재탄생의 상징이 있음을 알 수 있었는데 이로써 유리의 상징적 의미가 연금술, 동화, 임상 사례에서 보편적으로 사용되었음을 확인할 수 있었다.

A symbol holds something beyond a definite and direct meaning. We continuously use symbolic terms to represent a concept which cannot be completely defined and explained. A symbol embodies an image of some contents that transcend our consciousness and refers to the eternal basis of our nature given by God. If we understand and experience symbols, they will guide us towards the dignity inherent in mankind. With the properties of shining beauty, luster, transparency, and reflection of light, the glass has been widely used not only in daily life but also in many professional fields, as an important material of household items, constructions, jewels, and the like. It is very fragile. The glass is closely connected with our daily life, and thus it has been often used as a symbolic language. Even in many sand trays created by clients during sandplay therapy, glass of different meanings and purposes is frequently used. This study was intended to amplify the symbolic meanings of the glass appearing in the sand trays of young clients during sandplay, through a symbolic consideration of the glass in the contexts of alchemy and fairy tales. With regard to the process of alchemy, the glass symbolizes “ouroboros, duality, death, and rebirth” at the stage of nigredo, “Mercurius, purification, and divinity” at the stage of albedo, and “refinement, Self, and transformation” at the stage of rubedo. The glass in fairy tales represents “duality, death, a hero s task, rites of passage, and the shadow”. In addition, through the sandplay counseling case of children and adults who have experienced sexual violence victims, it was found that glass is a symbol of “divinity, duality, death, severance, purification, self, and rebirth”. This confirmed that the symbolic meaning of glass was universally used in alchemy, fairy tales, and clinical cases.
