유치원 영어교육의 현황에 관한 연구

A study on present status of English education in preschool

본 연구는 3∼5세 대상 유치원 영어교육의 현황을 알아보고자 하였으며, 이를 위해 전국 공·사립유치원 총 50군데를 대상으로 영어교육의 실시 이유, 운영 방식, 교육 내용 및 교수 학습방법을 2021년 5월 10일부터 5월 28일까지 3주간 설문 조사를 통해 탐구하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS v.12를 이용하여 빈도 분석을 실시하였다. 주요 연구 결과는 유치원 영어교육의 실시 이유로 학부모의 요구가 가장 많았으며 원장의 교육철학, 영어교육에 대한 시대적 추세 등이 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 운영 방식은 주로 유아의 연령과 발달을 고려하여 동화책을 이용한 스토리텔링이나 게임, 노래 등이 활용되었으나 읽기와 쓰기 위주의 학습지 등도 일부 이용되고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 교육 내용이나 교수학습방법도 언어교육의 핵심인 맥락 기반의 실용영어가 주를 이루었지만 아직까지도 암기식의 단어나 문장 제시방식도 활용되고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 유아 대상 영어교육은 유아교육 학문적으로 유아의 연령과 발달수준을 고려할 때 적절하지 않지만 현황을 분석해 볼 때 많은 유아교육기관이 영어교육을 실시하고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서는 유치원에서 실시되고 있는 현재의 영어교육에 대해 유아교육학적, 제도적, 정책적 방향 제시가 미비하여 발달에 적합하지 않은 방식으로 실시되고 있는 것에 대한 시급한 대책을 제언하였다.

This study explored the present status of English education for 3 to 5 years old children at kindergarten. In order for finding out, 50 public and private kindergartens throughout nationwide have been surveyed on the reason of educating young children about speaking English in kindergarten, the way of conducting, educational contents and instructional learning methods from May, 10th through May, 28th, 2021. Collected data was analyzed and conducted frequency analysis by using SPSS v.12. Research results are as follows; the reason of English education in kindergarten is mainly to meet parents’ educational wishes and needs, and secondly, the educational philosophy of kindergarten principle and the trends on the importance of English language proficiency. Young children are usually educated by storytelling of children’s books, playing games, and singing songs and chants, but some institutions are still using drilland-practice of words and expressions. Educational contents and instructional learning methods for very young children are supposed to be important of being conducted based on the contexts of practical English used, but rote memorization methods are still being utillized. In order to support young children’s meaningful language development in terms of learning English as a second language, and consider the current status of kindergarten which educate young children about speaking English, the urgent remedy on proposing the profer educational policy and the developmentally appropriate guidelines in early childhood education fields should be taken seriously.
