‘영혼 돌봄’으로서의 교육과 정치: 플라톤 정치철학

Education and Politics as ‘Soul Caring’: Implications of Platonic Views

이 글은 정치와 교육의 ‘근원적 동일성’을 선명한 형태로 보여주고 있는 플라톤의 정치철학에 주목하여, 그 관점이 지니는 의미가 무엇인가를 고찰하기 위한 글이다. 플라톤의 정치철학은 소크라테스의 철학이 지녔던 정치적 의미를 드러낸 것으로서, 그의 견해에 의하면, 정치와 교육은 모두 ‘영혼을 돌보는 일’이라는 동일한 목적을 추구하는 것으로 간주된다. ｢국가｣에 나타난 그의 교육국가론은 참다운 정치는 곧 철학을 핵심으로하는 교육에 의하여 성립하며, 다른 어떤 것이 아니라, 교육을 잘하는 것이 훌륭한 정치라는 견해를 선명하게 보여준다. 아리스토텔레스 이후 정치와 교육은 ‘영혼 돌봄’이라는 그 본래적 성격을 점차로 상실하는 방향의 변화를 겪어왔지만, 플라톤의 주장은 정치뿐만 아니라 교육의 의미를 보다 온전하게 파악하는 데에 중요한 기여를 한다. 그의견해는 교육의 본원적 목적이 ‘영혼 돌봄’ 또는 ‘심성함양’에 있다는 점을 보여주며, 또한 교육의 의미는 개인적 차원이 아니라 공동체적 삶의 차원에서 파악되어야 한다는 점을 보여준다.

The aim of this paper is to examine the implications of Plato’s political philosophy which shows clearly the ‘fundamental unity’ of politics and education. As successor of philosophy of Socrates, Plato stipulates politics and education have the same purpose of ‘caring for soul’. His ideas on the ‘educational state’ indicate the view that true politics can be possible only on the ground of education, and the prime task of politics is nothing but educating its citizens, i.e., caring for their soul. Plato’s politics as ‘soul caring’, which has almost the same meaning as ‘Arts of Mind’(心法) of the Doctrine of the Means(中庸), shows the original nature of politics and education. Although politics and education have undergone changes in the direction of gradually losing their original nature of ‘soul caring’, Plato s ideas on the ‘unity of politics and education’, contributes importantly to understanding more fully the nature of politics and education. If we focus merely on individual level, the nature of education cannot fully understand, for education in itself has the nature as the public and political, it is based on the concern of man not as individual but as communal existence.
