A Study on the Development of the Peace-Based Unification Education Program

Purpose: This study aims to develop a peace-based unification education curriculum. In South Korea, unification education is provided due to special circumstances divided into South and North Korea. The fundamental purpose of unification education is to prepare for unification and prepare for the future of unification. However, if you look at the contents of unification education, you can find that they do not meet the purpose of unification education. There is a problem that unification education sticks to the divided situation by emphasizing historical facts. To solve this problem, it is necessary to develop a peace-based unification education curriculum. Method: Literature analysis methods are used to achieve the purpose of the study. Research on unification education and peace education was analyzed. The research materials registered in the Korea Research Foundation s database were boiled as the main analysis targets. Results: Research has shown that standards for developing peace-based unification education programs have been developed. It specifically presented the characteristics of a peace-based unification education program considering the developmental characteristics of elementary, middle and high school students. Looking at the characteristics of the program, elementary schools focus on peace-based education, middle schools on peace and unification, and high schools on peace, unification, coexistence and sustainability-based education. Conclusion: The fundamental purpose of unification education is to promote peaceful coexistence, or sustainability. To realize this, students should be given a chance to develop a warm heart, a cool judgment, and all. The researcher proposed a peace-based unification education that could foster a warm heart and cool judgment on unification and North Korea. To realize this, each school class presented a model of peace education, peace-based unification education, and analysis-based unification education in consideration of the student s development stage. The present model is a minimal challenge for future research. In the future, we will be able to listen to the opinions of various researchers and propose more specific and feasible unification education courses.
