Study on Tendencies of Christian Counseling of Siang–Yang Tan

본 논문에서는 기독교심리학자이자 목회자인 샹양 탄(Siang–Yang Tan)의 기독교상담의 성향을 분석했다. 연구자는 기독교상담의 성향을 알 수 있는 요인을 성경관, 인간이해, 정신병리 및 심리학 개방성 등으로 보고, 이러한 것을 Tan의 저술과 논문을 근거로 분석 및 정리했다. 첫째, Tan은 성경은 내담자의 문제를 다루는 기본 지침서이므로, 상담자는 상담과정에서 성경을 활용할 수 있어야 한다는 성경관을 가지고 있다. 둘째, Tan은 인간은 심리학적이고 영적인 욕구가 있다고 보고, 인간을 신체적, 심리적, 사회적, 영적 존재로서 통합론적인 관점으로 이해했다. 셋째, 죄는 ‘죄책감’이라는 정서적인 고통의 정신병리를 가져오며, 교만은 자아에 대한 집착의 결과에서 온다고 보았다. 인간이 고통을 당하는 이유는 자아에 대한 집착 때문이다. 넷째, Tan은 일반상담의 원리와 심리학을 배척하지 않고 기독교상담과 통합적인 태도를 취하면서도, 통합의 위험성을 지적했다. 이 밖에 Tan은 평신도상담과 우울증 및 만성 통증 완화 등에 관심을 가졌으며, 내담자의 문제 해결을 위해서 주로 인지행동기법을 사용했다. 요약컨대 Tan의 기독교상담은 복음적인 태도를 취하면서도, 동시에 심리학적 기법을 최대한 활용하는 통합적인 입장을 취한다고 할 수 있다.

This paper analyzed the tendencies of Christian counseling of Siang–Yang Tan as a Christian psychologist and pastor. I considered elements that the tendencies of Christian counseling could be known as biblical viewpoints, human understanding, psychopathology, and openness of psychology. And, I analyzed and arranged these based on books and papers of Tan. He emphasized that Christian counselors should counsel on the basis of the biblical counseling courses, but he thought that counseling could receive help of other elements besides the Bible. He has synthetic understanding that humans are understood from physical, psychological, social, and spiritual viewpoints. In the openness of psychology, though he took integrated attitude without excluding principles of general counsel, he pointed out dangerousness of the integrity. As his main counsel technique, cognitive behavior technique was used mostly for the problem solutions of clients. Tan is a Christian counselor who emphasized that the thing which can change a person ultimately is the work of the Holy Spirit although psychological effort is important for the change and problem solution of the person.
