중년기 혼외관계 경험의 과정분석 연구

A study on experiences of middle-aged extramarital affairs process analysis

본 연구는 중년 남녀의 혼외관계 경험의 과정과 구조를 이해하고 규명하여 실체이론(substantive theory)을 개발하고자 실시되었다. 이를 위해 혼외관계를 경험하고 있거나 2년 이내에 혼외관계경험이 있었던 중년기 남, 녀 8명을 이론적 표본추출 방법으로 선정하여 심층면접을 실시하였고 Strauss와 Corbin(1996)의 근거이론(Grounded Theory) 접근을 사용하여 질적 분석하였다. 심층 면담자료를 개방코딩과 축코딩으로 개념화하고 범주화한 결과, 106개의 개념, 35개의 하위범주, 18개의 범주가 도출되었다. 본 연구가 갖는 가장 큰 의의는 혼외관계 경험을 시간의 경과에 따라 과정분석함으로써 혼외관계를 경험하는 중년기 내담자들과 그 배우자들을 조력하기 위한 상담 개입의 자료를 제시한 점이다. 본 연구에서 도출된 결과들은 상담현장에서 상담자가 혼외관계에 어려움을 겪고 있는 내담자를 돕는 데 필요한 자료가 될 것이다. 또한 혼외관계로 인하여 믿음의 공동체에서 떠나는 사람들을 도울 수 있는 자료로 활용될 것을 기대한다.

The purpose of this study is to develop a substantive theory to understand and inquire the process and structures of extramarital affairs of middleaged men and women. Participants were found to have dysfunctional family backgrounds in their family of origin and to have accumulate dysfunctional communication patterns with their spouse. Also they were found to develop symbiotic attachments that seemed to provide a deep sense of happiness as they experienced undivided attentions from a person other than their spouse and to experience internal conflicts because of their moral, religious guilts in the process of their extramarital affairs. Participants were found to struggle with conflicts between two relationships without breaking any relationship. The most meaningful implication of this study lies in providing some foundational ideas for intervention in counseling process with clients and their spouse who struggle with extramarital affars in their middle life crises, based on accurate assessment in their stages of affairs. This study can be utilized for counselors to better understand their clients with difficulties in extramarital relationships and to be taught the meanings of symbiotic experiences in those relationship as well.
