A Study on the Recovery Process of Codependency of Adult Children of Alcoholics

  • 86

The purpose of this study consists in analyzing deeply the structure of recovery process, essence of recovery and its meaning, by carrying out a research into the experiences of ACOA(Adult Children of Alcoholics) in their recovery process by means of interviews. For this study, a sample of 9 persons who have recovered from codependency through the recovery process after having been diagnosed as codependency, have been theoretically selected among the ACOA in the twenties and thirties, and the data which were collected by means of in–depth interviews with them have been qualitatively analyzed by using research method of grounded theory of Strauss and Corbin(1996). The essence of this study was found to be ‘regaining himself and standing independently.’ This ‘regaining himself and standing independently’ signifies a turning from pathological codependency to salutary interdependency, and to live a life as an independent identity through an insight into the object on which they are codependent. That is an evolution from non–differentiation to differentiation.
