검색 엔진을 통해 본 아슐리안 주먹도끼 관련 뉴스 정보

Analysis of news information related to Acheulean handaxes through a search engine

콘텐츠의 방대성, 접근의 용이성으로서 지식 정보 사회에서 검색 엔진(검색 서비스) 구글(Google)의 위치는 독보적이다. 본고에서는 익숙한 절대자인 구글에서 만나는 구석기 고고학적 뉴스를 살펴보고자 한다. 학술적 조사 연구 대상인 아슐리안 주먹도끼는 뉴스라는 대중적 정보체계와 만나게 된다. 구글은 이 정보를 정리 분류하여 일반 소비자에게 전달은 한다. 본고의 목적은 ‘구석기시대 아슐리안 주먹도끼 관련 경향성 관찰’에 있다. 이를 살피는 데 있어 구글이 제공하는 아슐리안 주먹도끼 관련 뉴스를 분류하는 작업을 하였다. 분류를 위해서 사용된 속성은 기관 국적, 사용 언어, 발간 시기, 석기 관련성, 발간 기관, 성격 전반, 키워드이다. 2019년 2020년 두 해에 걸쳐서 구글이 제공하는 뉴스 기사가 현재 한반도의 소비자에게 어떠한 의미를 제공하는지에 대해서 살피고자 한다.

As one of the leading search engines, Google has firmly established its dominance in the current information society. As Google is an influential information provider, it affects both daily life as well as the academic sectors. Therefore, it plays a significant role in promoting and reproducing academic achievements in general. In past decades, up-to-date information has been accessible to the public through conventional mass media such as newspapers and broadcasting stations. However, it is now delivered through consolidated web-based news with the help of aggregation technology. Google is unique in this area. The news search results for ‘handaxe and Acheulean’ provided by Google have considerable implications for these developments in information access. A review of the 2019-20 results shows a view that is favored toward Anglo-Americans. However, this is the result of its own algorithm, and it would be a reasonable and efficient approach to reflect what the absolute majority thinks. In some aspects, the search results of ‘handaxe’ and ‘Acheulean’ in the current system do not provide many opportunities to review minority opinions, particularly those of non-Anglo-Americans.
