This study was attempted to be used as basic data for nursing education by checking whether cooperative learning can be applied to theoretical subjects to improve communication ability, self-directed learning ability, and self-efficacy to be achieved by nursing students. This is an inequality control pre-post and post-similar experimental study to investigate the effects of cooperative learning activities on communication ability, self-directed learning, and self-efficacy of nursing students by conveniently sampling two classes of nursing departments at a university. A total of 72 subjects, 37 in the experimental group and 35 in the control group, participated in the study. (1) There was no statistically significant difference between the experimental group and the control group according to the subject’s gender, age, residence type, economic status, and mental health status, indicating that the two groups were homogeneous. (2) Before the experiment, There was no significant difference, and the two groups were found to be homogeneous. communication ability (t=1.372, p=0.176), self-directed learning ability (t=1.043, p=0.303), and self-efficacy (t=0.501, p=0.615) (3) After the experimental treatment, communication ability (t=-8.541, p=0.001) and self-directed learning ability (t=8.030, p=0.001) were significantly increased, and there was no significant difference in self-efficacy (t=1.190, p=0.239). According to the results of this study, by applying cooperative learning to theoretical subjects, it is possible to effectively improve the communication ability and self-directed learning ability lacking in nursing major students.
