The purpose of this study was to explore the retirement experience and adaptation process in the transitional retirement period of men. For this purpose, depth interview was performed with 12 men between the age of 60 and 65 and grounded theory method was used to collect and analyze the data. As a result of analyzing the data, it was found that retired men experienced not only ‘feeling of emptiness from the loss of the role related to the job’but also ‘liberation from the oppression related to the job’. Retired men did not stay long in ‘the feeling of emptiness’but they very soon and actively forwarded to the adaptation process which was composed of four phases - (1) ‘chaos and shrinking’phase, (2) ‘looking back and appreciation’phase, (3) ‘stabilizing and looking for’phase, and (4) ‘forwarding to new life’phase. The new life has four types - (1)‘continuing the job’type, (2) ‘educating the younger’type (3) ‘serving’type and (4) ‘enjoying’type. Based on the result of this study, pastoral counselling and care program can be planned and developed for the man retired to adapt themselves well to the retirement situation and to live the second life of more meaning and affluence.
