A Case Study on Art-Therapy for Overcoming Grief with the Bereaved Families

The purpose of this study is to illuminate the therapeutic efficacy of art therapy in assistance of two middle-aged bereaved women in overcoming the sense of loss. In our culture, it seems that we avoid dealing with an issue of loss even though many researchers have found that they require professional intervention. Therefore this study focused on the way how the bereaved family could go through their grief and adapt to their changed life. Death will be the rite of passage for the growth encountered in life. And then attempted to test now the art therapy could be a space of ritual for modern people who lost their ritual; also the death could be a creative death for change. This study was conducted on Case Study. Case study 1 is about a middle-aged woman participant A who had sudden death of her spouse. Other case study is about a middle-aged woman participant B who bereaved of her mother. For both of two participants, the study was progressed for one year and 2-4months. As the results of these studies, creative space of art-therapy was able to provide enough space to grieve for the deceased. It provided ritual space of liberation by resolving pending issues with the deceased. The activities of art-therapy had provided the creative energy with new strength to inner state of the grieving process. Additionally, The study has shown the different patterns of bereavement process. The followings are the five steps of grieving process which takes the cyclic patterns;1. Period of Shock. 2. Period of Remembering the Deceased. 3. Period of Expressing Emotion 4. Period of Separation and Searching for oneself. 5. Period of Facing on the World by Gaining a New Identity.
