Psychoanalytic and Christian Reflections on the Care of People with Borderline Personality Disorder: A Focus on the Concepts of Didier Anzieu

There has been an enormous increase in the number of people who are suffering from borderline personality disorder (BPD). This paper discusses BPD from perspectives of psychoanalysis and Christian counseling. In the first section of this paper, the author employs the concepts of the skin ego and the psychical envelope which were elaborated by French psychoanalyst and professor of psychology Didier Anzieu in order to gain a deeper understanding of BPD. In the second section, the author reviews the life story of Anzieu to obtain a better perception of his psychoanalytic concepts. Then in the third section, the author looks at how Anzieu views and understands BPD in terms of the concept of the skin ego, whereas the author in the fourth section explores BPD in terms of the concept of the psychical envelope. In the fifth section, the author introduces the perspectives of Christian counseling for the care of people with BPD. And in the last section of the paper, the author indicates the benefits and the limits of Anzieu’s concepts of the skin ego and the psychical envelope on BPD. Not only does the author make up for the weak points in Anzieu’s theory by suggesting the perspectives of Christian counseling, but also evaluate the benefits and the limits of Anzieu’s theory from a Christian perspective.
