Satir Transformational Systemic Therapy & the Pursuit of Spiritual Wholeness

Currently in the area of Christian Spirituality, there is an emphasis on people pursuing holistic healing. The fields of pastoral counseling and psychotherapy have increasingly become interested in empowering clients to achieve spiritual wholeness. Biblically, personal growth is considered a gift of God. Therefore people begin life without any spiritual inadequacies, with the ability to pursue the fullness of their God-given potential. The latter view is also found in Satir transformational systemic therapy, such as developmental process of the model, characteristics of spirituality, areas of therapeutic intervention, therapeutic methods, and quality of therapist. In other words, Satir transformational systemic therapy is consistent with the biblical idea of people using their spirituality as life-force energy, which extended family therapy beyond existing boundaries. Satir transformational systemic therapy emerged to address what the solution-focused approach does not, and integrates the humanistic approach with the goal of reaching spiritual wholeness. The purpose of this study is to identify the need for pastoral counseling to integrate Satir transformational systemic therapy in order to help the client’s pursuit of spiritual wholeness. Pastoral counseling must also gain an understanding of how the theory and practice of family therapy may be utilized in clients’healing and growth, in addition to their current practices. The proposed study also aims to introduce methods for utilizing Satir transformational systemic therapy in the field of pastoral care. Users of pastoral counseling integrating Satir’s model, must first understand that undergirding Christian pastoral counseling, is the traditional ideology that human beings are born with a sinful nature and that Jesus Christ’s has atoned for these sins. Sole users of pastoral counseling having the view that human beings are created by the God may have difficulty balancing this idea with the destructiveness human beings are capable of, due to their original sin. Therefore, those integrating pastoral counseling with Satir’s model must have consistent dialogue in order to balance the ideas of humans’sinful nature and the potential for personal growth. Additionally, integrated and humanistic approaches for healing and growth should be centered within a comprehension of the impact of the redemptive work of Jesus Christ.
