This article addresses social violence as invisible power. This article argues that visible violence such as domestic violence, sexual abuse, child abuse and strikes cannot be fully understood unless Christian counselors become aware of social violence as invisible power. This article draws its argument from Emmanuel Levinas’proposal that each encounter requires obligation, that is, mutual responsibility. This article offers three suggestions with which Christian counselors may become socio-culturally competent when they practice their professions. The three suggestions are ‘Christian counseling as a social practice,’‘alertness and attention,’and ‘revisiting one’s conviction.’This article concludes that these three suggestions will help Christian counselors to become aware of inevitable connection of visible violence and invisible violence and to appropriately respond to social violence.
