Students Religion and Religious Coping in A Korean University : Client s Religion in Korean Counseling

  • 18

Religious coping in Korean students is explored. This exploration is based on the theory of Pargament(1997). His idea of positive religious coping and negative religious coping is employed. Relationships between religious coping and sex and religion are analyzed. 104 male students and 133 female students completed a pack of questionnaires. They are composed of 94 Protestants, 24 Catholics, 21 Buddhists, and 98 non-religious students. The Brief RCOPE developed by Pargament et al (1998) is translated and modified. It includes 13 items for the positive religious coping and 8 items for the negative religious coping. Their Cronbach‘s s are .97 and .88 respectively. α The two-way ANOVA is completed to verify the effect of sex and religion on religious coping. Pearson s coefficient is calculated to verify the correlation between the positive religious coping and the negative religious coping. The primary effects of religion on the positive religious coping and the negative religious coping are significant. And the correlation between the positive religious coping and the negative religious coping is significant. In discussion, the validity of the positive religious coping questionnaire is suspected in Korea because it is a theistic religious coping. Two principles for the Korean Christian counseling are suggested. First, clients religions need to be considered carefully, because their religious frameworks are different from one another in their positive religious copings. Second, Protestants positive religious copings need to be explored further, because their positive religious copings are significantly related to their negative religious copings.
