Christian Counseling on the Treatment of Depression: Based on the Relation between Depression and Religiosity

Depression has been increasing rapidly, due to contemporary intense competition and rapid structural transformation. Because the medical model of depression has been proved to be effective, it prevails all over the world. However, it has demonized the subjective pain and it has ignored the significance of depression. In order to find an alternative to the medical model, this paper seeks for Christian counseling for the depressed based on an analysis of the relationship between depression and religiosity and religious psychotherapy. Depression is decreased in those looking for and experiencing social supports in congregation. It is reduced in those with beneficient image of God and collaborative image of their relationships with God. It is relieved when intrinsic religious orientation and religious experiences are respected. Management of bereavement is succeeded in religious psychotherapy Based on the analysis of the correlation between depression and religiosity and religious psychotherapy, five suggestions for Christian counseling for the depressed. First, beneficient image of God is to be promoted. Second, the networks of social support is to be built. Third, more models of Christian counseling for the depressed are to be constructed. Fourth, intrinsic religious orientation and religious experience is to be respected. Fifth, bereavement and reactive depression are to be differentiated from the affective disorders. Because they are suitable to Christian counseling.
