The Lives of Repeaters of College Entrance Exam: Re-thinking Meritocracy and Education Fever

본 연구는 질적 연구방법을 이용하여 대입 N수를 경험한 19명의 연구 참여자들의 내러티브를 탐구하였다. 본 연구의 목적은 연구 참여자들이 N수 경험을 어떻게 구성하고 해석하는지 탐구함으로써 능력주의와 교육열에 대해 비판적으로 고찰하는 데 있다. Foucault의 담론 이론과 Deleuzed와 Guattari의 욕망 이론을 분석적 렌즈로 활용하였다. 연구 결과, 첫째, 우리 사회가 N수를 권하고 있다는 것을 보여주었다. 둘째, N수생들은 사회 지배담론의 예속적 주체이자 적극적인 행위자의 역할을 수행하고 있었다. 셋째, 대입 N수의 증가라는 현상 이면에는 특정한 삶의 방식을 추구하려는 코드화된 사회 구성원들의 욕망이 있었다. 연구 결과가 학교교육에 있어 갖는 시사점에 대해 논의하였다.

The study explores narratives of 19 research participants who have repeated the national college entrance exam. The purpose of this study is to re-think meritocracy by analyzing the ways in which the research participants construct and interpret their experiences as repeaters. Foucault’s notion of discourse and Deleuze & Guattari’s concept of desire offers the theoretical framework for the analysis. It demonstrates that the society encourages them to choose to repeat the college entrance exam. The participants play a role as an active agent to reproduce the discourses of meritocracy while being simultaneously subjectivated by them. There is the type of social desire that is coded in a particular way underlying the phenomenon of repeating the college entrance exam. The implications of this study for schooling are discussed.
