본 연구는 실천현장 사회복지종사자들이 ‘발달장애인’이자 ‘노인’이라는 중첩적인 특성을 가진 고령 발달장애인을 어떻게 받아들이고, 이들을 지원하는 과정에서 어떠한 실천적 도전과제에 직면하고 대처해나가는지를 탐색하기 위한 목적을 가진다. 이를 위해서 장애인과 노인 분야에서 활동하고 있는 총 16명 사회복지종사자들을 대상으로 초점집단면접(FGI)을 실시하였다. 분석결과, 5개 주제와 16개 하위주제가 도출되었다. 사회복지종사자들은 고령 발달장애인을 ‘미지(未知)의 인구 집단’으로 받아들이고, ‘발달장애와 노화의 모호한 경계에서 혼란’을 겪는 것으로 드러났다. 또한, ‘장애인의 나이 듦에 준비되지 못한 실천현장’에서 자신들의 기대 역할과 과업을 수행하는데 어려움을 겪고 있었다. 그럼에도 불구하고 사회복지종사자들은 ‘장애인과 노인의 교차점에서 새로운 시도’를 펼쳐나가고, ‘대안 없는 현재와 미래, 깊어가는 고민’을 거듭하면서 자신들의 역할과 과업을 발달장애인의 나이 듦에 따른 상황변화에 맞게 진전시켜 나가고 있는 것으로 드러났다. 이상의 연구결과는 발달장애인의 나이 듦에 대응하기 위해 실천현장 종사자들의 지식과 실천기술의 향상과 지역사회 서비스 및 자원 개발의 필요성을 강조한다.
This study aims to explore how social workers recognize older adults with developmental disabilities, and what challenges they face and how they deal with these challenges in supporting this population group. The total of 16 social workers in disability and aged care sectors participated in focus group interviews. The interview data was thematically analysed, and 5 themes and 16 sub-themes emerged. Social workers recognized older adults with developmental disabilities as ‘an unknown population group’ and experienced ‘confusion at the crossroad between developmental disability and ageing’. They struggled to meet their expected roles and tasks due to ‘an unprepared practice setting for older adults with developmental disability’. Despite this, they tried to adjust their roles and tasks to the changing circumstances and needs of older adults with developmental disabilities in the ageing process accordingly, through ‘exercising a new approach at the conjunction of development disability and ageing’ and ‘contemplating alternatives for the present and future’. The results highlight the need for the enhancement of practical knowledge and skills in social workers, and the development of community services and resources in order to better respond to older adults with developmental disability.
