경주지역 신라 수혈식석곽묘 출토품과 묘곽면적 상관관계 재검토

Re-examination of Correlations between Grave Goods and Grave Sizes of Silla Stone-lined Pit Burials in Gyeongju

최근 경주지역에서 조사보고된 신라 수혈식석곽묘가 증가함에 따라 적석목곽묘와 함께 신라 무덤의 주요한부분을 구성하였던 수혈식석곽묘의 사회적 성격에 대해서도 구체적인 연구가 요구되고 있다. 이에 수혈식석곽묘의 구조적 특징 및 시간적 위치 파악에 더해 수혈식석곽묘 간 위계적 관계 설정 시도가 이루어진 바 있다. 그러나 적석목곽묘에 적용되는 위계 구분 기준, 특히 출토품과 묘곽면적 사이의 위계적 상관관계가 수혈식석곽묘에도 확대 적용될 수 있다고 선험적으로 상정하는 기존의 견해에는 문제가 있다. 이에 본고에서는신라 석곽묘가 조사보고된 경주지역 유적을 중심지의 월성북고분군, 탑동-교동고분군, 황성동-석장동고분군, 그 주변의 북부지역, 서부지역, 남부지역, 남동부지역, 동남해안지역으로 구분하고, 전체 묘곽면적이 확인된 수혈식석곽묘 552기를 대상으로 출토품과 묘곽면적 사이의 관계를 전면적으로 재검토하였다. 이를 통해경주지역 수혈식석곽묘의 묘곽면적은 출토품보다 지역과 유적에 따라 주요한 차이를 나타냄을 알 수 있었다. 따라서 적석목곽묘 출토품과 묘곽면적의 상관관계에 터한 위계 구조 안에 수혈식석곽묘도 그대로 포섭된다고 상정하는 기존 견해는 수혈식석곽묘의 지역적 특수성에 대한 고려를 통해 수정되어야 한다.

With the increasing number of Silla stone-lined pit burials excavated and reported in Gyeongju, attempts are being made to understand hierarchical relations between stone-lined pit burials in the region. This line of research certainly has the potential to help understand social relations implicated in the construction of stone-lined pit burials exhibiting differences in grave goods and/or grave sizes. Nevertheless, it is assumed in previous studies that rules for hierarchical classifications of stone-piled wooden cists are applicable to hierarchical classifications of stone-lined pit burials. This is problematic, above all, because such rules are in fact only applicable to a small part of stone-lined pit burials in Gyeongju. Recognizing this, I re-examined the claimed correlation between grave goods and grave sizes through individual stone-lined pit burials found in Gyeongju. Analysis shows that such rules are only partially applicable in Gyeongju. Therefore, it is suggested that such universal rules as assumed in previous studies should be corrected in view of chronological and regional differences.
