『주홍글자』에 나타난 청교도주의의 배타성과 이중성 고찰

A Study on Exclusivity and Duality of Puritanism in The Scarlet Letter

본 연구의 목적은 이상주의적 도덕관을 지닌 청교도주의가 지닌 모순된 편협함과 배타성에 대한 논의를 수행하는 것이다. 나다니엘 호손은 『주홍글자』에서 등장인물들을 통해서 위선, 증오심, 복수에 대한 집착, 파멸, 그리고 진정한 속죄의 모습을 묘사한다. 청교도 사회로부터 배척당한 여주인공인 헤스터는 타인에 대한 배려와 공감을 보이지만 청교도 사회에 속한 사람들은 배타성과 편협함을 보여준다. 헤스터는 부적절한 관계를 저지를 대가로서 청교도 사회로부터 비난과 배척을 당하는 여성이다. 그럼에도 불구하고, 그녀는 청교도 사회를 떠나지 않고, 이웃들과 단절보다는 소통의 관계를 유지한다. 호손은 『주홍글자』의 등장인물들을 통해서 청교도주위가 지녔던 엄격함과 지나친 율법주의에 대한 비판을 효과적으로 수행하고 있다. 물론 호손은 태생적으로 조상들로부터 종교적 영향이 컸던 집안 출신으로 청교도주의 자체를 부정하는 것이 아니다. 그는 그의 조상들이 자행했던 마녀재판과 같은 잘못들에 대한 죄의식과 종교적 본질을 벗어난 청교도주의의 배타성을 비판적으로 바라보는 것이다. 결론적으로 호손은 청교도주의 사회가 이상적인 도덕성에 치우치기보다는 인간의 한계를 인정할 필요성을 요구한다. 다시 말해서, 종교의 본질은 인간이 죄의 한계성을 갖지만 끊임없는 속죄의 삶을 통해서 마음의 평안과 구원의 가능성을 높이는 것에 있다고 할 수 있다.

The purpose of this study is to discuss the contradictory narrowness and exclusivity of Puritanism with an idealistic moral view. In The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne portrays hypocrisy, hatred, obsession with revenge, ruin, and true atonement through characters. Hester, a public figure who is ostracized by Puritan society, shows her consideration and empathy for others, but those in the Puritan society show exclusivity and narrowness. Hester is a woman who is denounced and rejected by Puritan society in exchange for committing an inappropriate relationship. Nevertheless, she does not leave the Puritan society and maintains a relationship of communication rather than severance with her neighbors. Hawthorne effectively carries out a critique of the strictness and excessive legalism around the Puritans through the characters of The Scarlet Letter. Of course, Hawthorne is from a family with a strong religious influence from his forefathers, so he does not deny Puritanism itself. He critically views the exclusivity of Puritanism beyond the religious essence and guilt for the wrongdoings of his ancestors, such as witch trials. In conclusion, Hawthorne calls for the necessity of acknowledging human limitations rather than leaning towards ideal morality in a Puritanist society. In other words, the essence of religion is to increase the possibility of salvation and peace of mind through the life of continuous atonement even though humans have the limitations of sin.
