The Power Struggle and the Narrative of the Weak in Anne Brontë’s Agnes Grey

본 논문은 앤 브론테의 『아그네스 그레이』 소설 속에 나타난 독특한 내러티브에 대해서 논하고자 하는데 소설 속에서 서술자는 자신의 욕망을 감추는 정제된 서술로 권선징악적인 교훈을 전하고자 한다. 이러한 내러티브적인 특성이 형성된 원인은 작가 앤 브론테의 삶과 소설 속 아그네스 그레이의 삶에서 찾아 볼 수 있다. 늘 집안의 막내로 인정받기를 열망하던 앤 브론테가 각종 권력관계를 전복하고 싶은 은밀한 욕망을 드러낸다. 여기에 이분법적 구별과 도덕적 잣대를 무기로 삼아 자신을 억압한 이들을 비판하는 약자들의 서사를 이용하는 방식으로 나타난다. 이것이 그녀가 은근히 분노와 절망을 표현하는 방식이고, 이것이 그녀가 그들을 물리치고자 하는 공격적이고 전복적인 욕망을 가지고 있다는 비난에서 면제되는 이유이기도 하다. 따라서 소설은 빈틈없는 교훈적 서술처럼 보이지만 표면 아래에는 욕망하는 자아가 가득하다.

This thesis attempts to discuss the unique narrative that appeared in Anne Bront&#235; s Agnes Grey, which has a pattern in discussing the lessons of good and evil with refined narratives that hide the narrator s desires for power over oppressors. The factors showing this narrative can be seen in Anne Bront&#235; s life and Agnes Gray s life. Anne Bront&#235;, who always longed for recognition as the youngest in the family, revealed a secret desire to overthrow various power relationships. Agnes Gray, like Anne Bront&#235;, meets various oppressors in the novel. Every time she is in trouble, dichotomous distinction and moral standards were used as weapons to criticize those who suppressed her, and I claim that these are the features of the narrative of the weak. This is the way she furtively expresses her fury and despair and this is also why she is exempted from the accusation that she has the aggressive and subversive desire to defeat them. Therefore, the text seems like a seamless didactic narrative but underneath the surface is filled with desiring-self.
