아내학대 생존자의 쉼터에서의 원조 경험에 관한 내러티브 탐구

A narrative inquiry into helping experience of wife abuse survivors at battered women’s shelters

내러티브 탐구방법을 활용한 본 연구는 아내학대 생존자들의 쉼터에서의 원조경험을 이해하기 위해 수행되었다. 이를 위해 본 연구에서는 피해자로서 쉼터서비스를 이용한 경험이있으며, 실천가로서 쉼터에서 일한 경험이 있는 3명의 아내학대 생존자를대상으로 심층인터뷰를 수행하였다. 연구결과 아내학대 생존자들은 쉼터에서 받은 은혜에 보답하기 위해, 아내학대 피해여성에 대한 사명감으로, 지지적인 쉼터 공동체에 대한 기억 때문에, 생계유지라는 현실적인 이유에서 쉼터에서 일하게 되었다. 연구참여자들에 의하면 자신과 유사한 경험을 한 여성들을 돕는 일은 과거의 삶을 재성찰할 수 있게 한 마중물이 되었고, 새로운 여정의 출발선이 되었으나, 쉼터입소자들에게 자신도 아내학대 생존자라는 것을 노출하기 어려웠고, 기술과 지식적인 면에서 아내학대 피해여성들을 돕기에는 자신의 역량이 부족하다는 것을 인식하게 된다. 한편, 과거 피해 경험이 있었기에 이들은 입소자와 직원 간의 교량 역할을 할 수 있었으며옹호자로서의 역할을 수행할 수 있었다.

Applying the narrative inquiry methodology, this study was conducted to gain a better understanding of wife abuse survivors’ helping experiences at a battered women’s shelter. In this study, in-depth interviews were conducted with three women who had previously used shelter services as a victim and also have in turn begun providing services at a women’s shelter. The results were as follows: wife abuse survivors started working at a women’s shelter as an act of gratitude, sense of duty toward victims of wife abuse, and memory of supportive shelter environment while also gaining a sense of livelihood. According to the study participants, working with women who had similar experiences was very meaningful. It was like a priming water which helped them to reflect their past life and also became a cornerstone to start the new journey. While helping wife abuse victim, the participants in this study experienced the dilemma related self-disclosure. Also, they noted that certain challenges arose in their abilitydirectly providing services to the victim due to lack of knowledge and skills. In spite ofsuch shortcomings, the participants served their role as a bridge between the battered women and the staff at the shelter and also performed the role as an advocate for the victims.
