Meaning of Alcohol Dependence of Female Alcoholics through Phenomenological Case Study

본 연구는 여성 알코올의존자들의 알코올의존의 의미를 드러내기 위한 연구이다. 이에 본 연구자들은 여성 알코올의존자 5명을 연구 참여자로 하여 이들의 알코올의존 경험을 심층적으로 분석하고자 질적연구방법으로 분석하였다. 특히 여성 알코올의존자들의 경험을 특정 범주화하기 보다는 다층적 의미를 드러내기 위해 현상학적 사례연구 방법으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 여성 알코올의존자에게 알코올의존 현상은 다차원적 의미체계로서 상당히 역동적인 해석과정이 필요하다는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 이들에게 알코올의존 현상은 ‘현실세계 탈주 열망’으로 보이지만 동시에 자기 자신의 ‘불완전성의 명증’이라는 이중적이고 다층적인 의미체계로 구성되어 있음을 확인할 수 있었다.

This qualitative study aimed to explore female alcoholics “alcohol dependence experience” in depth and then illuminate their meaning of alcohol dependence. Participants were a total of five korean women with alcohol dependence. We performed phenomenological case studies to bring to light the multi-layered in-depth meaning beyond the general categorization of the experiences of the participants. The analysis process revealed that participants’ meaning of alcohol dependence included a multiple semantic system, requiring a considerable dynamic interpretation process. As a result of the rigorous analysis, a “desire to escape in the real world” was emerged as the meaning of alcohol dependence among the female alcoholics, but their perceived “verification of incompleteness,” being composed of a twofold and multi-layered semantic system, was also connoted.
