한국 혼혈아동을 위한 펄 벅(Pearl Buck)의 민간사회복지활동에 관한 연구

A Study on Peal Buck’s Private Social Welfare Activities for Mixed-Race Children in Korea: Focusing on Analysis of Newspaper Articles

본 연구는 1960년대 한국 사회에서 냉대와 배제의 대상이었던 1세대 혼혈인을 위한 펄 벅의 사회복지활동의 태동과 전개 과정을 파악하기 위해 관련 문헌자료 검토와 신문기사에 관한 담론 분석을 진행하였다. 총 89건에 대한 비판적담론분석 방법을 적용한 결과, 1960년대 혼혈아에 대한 한국 사회의 지배적인 관점이 사회로부터 배제와 격리였다면 펄 벅은 혼혈아가 한국 사회의 구성으로 건전하게 양육되도록 개인에 대한 지원은 물론 정책적 옹호 활동을 전개하였다. 또한, 펄 벅은 혼혈아의 강점과 가능성에 주목하면서 사회참여를 확장하기 위해 노력하는 등 사회정의 실현의 가치에 기반하여 민간 사회복지활동을 전개하였으며, 이러한 노력으로 펄 벅은 혼혈아의 어머니로 불렸다. 펄 벅의 사망과 소사희망원의 내홍으로 혼혈아 사업은 중단 위기가 있었지만, 펄벅재단을 통해 혼혈아를 위한 사업이 지속 전개되어 펄 벅의 정신을 계승하고 있다. 연구 결과를 토대로 펄 벅의 혼혈아를 위한 민간사회복지 활동의 함의와 시사점을 제시하였다.

This study was intended to expand the discussion on the origin and development of multicultural social welfare in Korea by examining the role of Pearl Buck for the first generation of mixed-race people who were the object of cold treatment and exclusion in Korean society in the 1960s. This study conducted a review of relevant literature, and analyzed a total of 89 newspaper articles based on the method of critical discourse analysis (CDA). As a result of the study, Pearl Buck’s approach to mixed-race children was clearly distinguished from the dominant point of view in Korean society at that time, which was to separate and exclude them from mainstream society. In addition to supporting individuals, policy advocacy activities were carried out to ensure that mixed-race children were brought up in a healthy way as a part of Korean society. This study also confirmed that Pearl Buck realized the value of social justice through private social welfare activities, such as making efforts to expand the opportunities for their social participation, while paying attention to their strengths and possibilities. Because of her efforts, Peal Buck was called the mother of mixed-race children. Even though there was a crisis to Pearl Buck’s death and the internal conflicts of the Sosa Opportunity Center, the Pearl Buck Foundation inherited the spirit of Pearl Buck, and continued to develop activities for mixed-race children. Based on the findings of this study, the implications were presented.
