Exploring the story wrapped in rituals: a study of Damchon Seo, Dae-seok s Study on Shaman Epic.

Damchon Seo Dae-seok is a representative scholar of the first generation who academically established oral literature among the fields of Korean literature. At the time of the 1960s, terms such as Shin-ga, a Shaman Myth, and Bonpuri were more familiar than the term Shaman Epic. However, he conducted the studying that Shaman Epic was a transmission of shamanistic epics that set the starting point for narrative literature. In the early part of the study, Seo Dae-seok defined Shaman Epic as a Muga[shaman song] with a complete story . From a literary point of view, in particular, the Muga[shaman song] was examined with narrative at the center. Based on this, more than 90 Shaman Epics recorded at the time were classified into <Barigongju> type, <Jeseokbonpuri> type, <Ganglim-Doryeong> type, <Hallakgung> type, <A hundred years old skull> type, <Gungsani> type, <Creation of heaven and earth> type, and <The origin of the Emirejong> type. At the same time, he did not stop his academic activities for literary exploration, but also went to gutpan to investigate Shamanism ritual[巫儀] and submitted the results of a study called <East coast Shaman Epic>. Afterward, Seo Dae-seok discussed the literature of <Barigongju> and <Jeseokbonpuri>, which are currently known as representative Shaman Epic. The reason he chose the <Barigongju> and <Jeseokbonpuri> is that these two works were handed down nationwide and dealt with life and death, a fundamentally human problem. Specifically, Seo Dae-seok compared and reviewed the ‘narrative’ of <Barigongju> and <Jeseokbonpuri>’s different versions, which are handed down nationwide. As a result, <Barigongju> divided into Seoul, Hamnam, Gyeongbuk(East Coast), and Jeonnam. On the other hand <Jeseokbonpuri> divided into Northeast, Southeast, and Jeju Island. Based on these findings, He divided the Shaman Epic Area to examine aspects of transmission and variation. At the same time, he found narrative models of The Life of a Hero and Women s Suffering contained in the narratives of <Barigongju> and <Jeseokbonpuri>, with this revealed the literary significance of Shaman Epic. As a result, Shaman Epic has been established as an area of oral literature, and Korean literature.
