Kristeva로 읽는 Maurice Sendak의 작품세계

Reading Maurice Sendak’s trilogy with Kristeva’s perspective

본 연구의 목적은 Maurice Sendak의 세 작품, 『깊은 밤 부엌에서』, 『괴물들이 사는 나라』 그리고 『잃어버린 동생을 찾아서』 를 Kristeva의 관점에서 읽는 것이다. 이야기의 주인공과 그들 행동의 특성이 보이는 의미를 탐색하기 위해서 Julia Kristeva의 개념들, 즉 기호계, 아브젝트, 코라 등을 사용하여 기호분석(semanalysis)하였다. 그 결과, 미키, 맥스, 아이다는 모두 과정중의 주체(subject in process)로서 이들 각각이 아브젝시옹하는 과정을 드러내는 것으로 읽을 수 있었다. 이들 각각은 내면화된 타자들, 즉 기호계와 연계된 코라, 아브젝트들이 상징계를 전복하고 경계를 확장시켜주면서 내면의 문제들을 극복하게 하는 것으로 해석될 수 있었던 것이다. 이런 접근은 Sendak의 그림책이 영유아기의 부정적 정서에 직면하고 이로부터 회복해가는 과정을 은유적으로 제시함은 물론, Kristeva의 담론이 영유아기 심리적 성장을 다룬 그림책의 의미를 깊이 있게 읽을 수 있는 또 하나의 틀이 될 수 있음을 시사한다고 볼 수 있다.

This study aims to analyze Sendak’s Trilogy; 『In the night kitchen』, 『Where the wild things are』, and 『Outside over there』 in terms of Kristeva’s perspective. For this purpose, Julia Kristeva’s major concepts such as subject in processes, semanalysis, abjection, the semiotic, the symbolic, chora, and poetic language were used to find meaning of the protagonist’s behavior in the Sendak‘s trilogy. As a result, all of the behaviors of Mickey, Max, and Ida were interpreted as abjection processes in which each character reveals their own subjectivity which are in being process. In other words, it can be understood that each protagonist shows how they encounter, interact with, and get to overcome their inner Others that is their own abjects. These results shows that Sendak’s picture books can be understood as a metaphor of children’s inner conflicts and recovery from those conflicts in addition to the possibility of making children have similar experiences in identifying with the characters too.
